Jena Malone – Actress – Angelica
FRED’s Chiara Nicoletti meets actress Jena Malone, protagonist of the film ANGELICA by Mitchell Lichtenstein where she plays both the role of Constance and that of her daughter Angelica.
Jena Malone talks about the physical challenges she had to face in playing this role, considering that she went through depression and weight loss as she embraced totally her character, a young, intense and innocent woman in Victorian England.
As the film deals with a tricky topic at the time, female sexuality, when talking about the way women experience and talk about sex and their sexuality now, Jena Malone says that, even though we’ve gone far from that moment of history and we can talk and get every information we want, there’s still a mistery in how women feel and experience things. This is why we should embrace the mistery of being a woman.
Plot: In Victorian England, innocent shopgirl Constance falls in love with Dr. Joseph Barton, a medical researcher. They soon marry, but their intense passion is cut short. After the life-threatening birth of daughter Angelica, puritanical doctors order abstinence, condemning Constance for lascivious appetites. Sexual repression opens a rift between the young couple. Frustration leads to obsession, and Constance becomes more and more protective of Angelica. Joseph’s secrets fuel the growing conflicts. Then, late at night, the household begins to be disrupted by what appears to be a paranormal predator. The eerie nocturnal visits multiply, evermore menacing and vividly evoking Constance’s deepest fears. With the help of staunch maid Nora, Constance reaches out to a spiritualist to cleanse the home of its terrors. But the arrival of charismatic Anne Montague brings even more complexities to the deteriorating Barton household. Constance places her deepest trust in Anne, and together they fight against a force that may be more sinisterly human than supernatural.

Mitchell Lichtenstein – director – Angelica
FRED’s Chiara Nicoletti interviews Mitchell Lichtenstein, the director of the film Angelica, which premiered in the Panorama Special section of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.
Lichtenstein deals with sexual repression and female sexuality once again and in order to do that, this time, he decides to set the story in the Victorian age. Big houses, corsets, tale of spirits and conservative habits to be the background of two love stories with only one protagonist, the young and innocent Constance (Jena Malone) and one reference point around which everything happens – the titular Angelica.
Ole Giaever – Filmmaker and actor – Out of Nature (Mot Naturen)
FRED’s Angelo Acerbi meets Ole Giaver, filmmaker and actor of the film Out of Nature (Mot Naturen) from the 65th International Film Festival.
Ole Giaver’s film was also this year’s winner of the Europa Cinemas award at the Berlinale. This one -man film director did all by himself. He tells us the story of a mid-thirties crisis and he has such a nice, and smart way to do it that we are simply compelled to go with it. Besides, the film is a small gem. and, hearing what he has to say, we understand why.
Plot: In a small Norwegian town the working week comes to an end. Thirtysomething Martin imagines the monotonous lives of strangers behind the windows of neighbouring offices. Then he takes a look at himself. His stream of thought makes him begin to have doubts about his own life. Embarking on a journey inside his head, he feels the need to be alone in nature. After asking his son about his day and sleeping with his wife, he packs a rucksack and jogs away from his family, into the mountains. Whether it is an unexpected confrontation with a hunter at an inopportune moment, an involuntary dip in an icy lake or turning into an eagle: Martin’s imaginary expedition constantly provides him with new ways to confront – relentlessly but with humour – his anxieties, dreams, neuroses and sexual desires. How is it supposed to work? How can he participate in his own life as son, partner and father? As with his directorial debut Fjellet (Panorama 2011) Ole Giæver once again allows the mountains to become a physical and emotional force field for naked existence that provides new ways of seeing life. He himself plays the role of Martin – his performance is both charming and disarmingly funny.

Radu Jude – Filmmaker – AFERIM!
FRED’s Chiara Nicoletti meets Romanian director Radu Jude in Berlin to present his third feature film Aferim! which is in competition at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.
Jude sets his third film in a wider space and in a past time, 19th century Romania, using Western genre elements to turn the film into an Eastern tale of Gypsy slavery. This vintage touch, the use of B&W and the ironic way in which historical facts and dialogues are build make the film a unique experiment in the New Wave of Romanian cinema.
Plot: In 19th century Romania, Costandin, a policeman of the time and his son travel through the country in search of a fugitive Gypsy slave.
