Colm McAuliffe, Senior programmer and live music curator, Cork Film Festival.
FRED’s Matt Micucci meets COLM McAULIFFE, senior programmer and curator of the 59th Cork Film Festival who tells us about the short films programme at this year’s edition of the festival and also gives us an overview of the priceless opportunities the film festival offers filmmakers presenting their works here, not just with screenings but through industry and networking events. On top of that, he also tells us about a very special music event taking place at the festival that ambitiously attempts to re-imagine Jodorowski’s DUNE, re-imagines the startling imagery, ambition and sheer cinematic psychedelia of the great director’s doomed attempts to bring Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel to life with live accompaniment from Europe’s premier purveyors of sonic devilment Gnod.

Frauke Finsterwalder, Filmmaker, Finsterworld.
FRED’s Matt Micucci chats with filmmaker Frauke Finsterwalder on her narrative feature film debut FINSTERWORLD, which is screening at the 59th Cork Film Festival. She talks to us about how for this film she built a whole microcosm, how she was influenced by fairytales and her use of dark comedy to deal with some dark and intense themes and issues.
This is the story of a number of individuals in Germany whose lives are connected in some ways, and all of them have dark sides which may shock us to the core.

Partick Ryan, Filmmaker – Emma Eliza Regan and Emma Willis, Actresses – Darkness On the Edge of Town
FRED’s Matt Micucci meets filmmaker Patrick Ryan and actresses Emma Eliza Regan and Emma Willis to talk about their feature DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN, moments after its screening at the 59th Cork Film Festival.
They talk about shooting a modern western in County Kerry with an extremely limited budget, the Shakespearean influences, and how working with a small crew turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
DARKNESS OF THE EDGE OF TOWN is the story of a troubled teenage sharpshooter Cleo (Emma Eliza Regan), who strives to avenge the death of her estranged elder sister after she is found murdered in a public bathroom. However, unknown to Cleo, the culprit is her best friend – and one and only friend – Robin (Emma Willis). Patrick Ryan’s film is quite unlike other Irish productions – independent and mainstream – and even dares to place female characters as the leading characters in a usually masculine narrative genre to great effect.
