  • Jeff Preiss – Low Down #KarlovyVaryFF

    Jeff Preiss, Director, Low Down.

Festival Section: Official Selection – Competition.

FRED meets Jeff Preiss to talk about his narrative feature film debut, after a long career as director of photography and documentary filmmaker, LOW DOWN. The film had its international premiere at the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and was included in the official selection competition.

In her memoir, Amy-Jo Albany describes what it was like growing up in the strangely sleepy environment of Hollywood’s 1970s bohemian community with a father who was at once a respected jazz pianist and a longtime heroin addict. Inspired by her story, Jeff Preiss shot his feature debut, which generates a highly complex atmosphere mixing the dreamlike nature of far-off yet joyful memories of her father with the pain she felt at witnessing his self-destructive addiction. Through the character of Joe Albany, this melancholy drama about Amy-Jo’s difficult transition to adulthood has a captivating musical flavor based on both precise craftsmanship and improvisation. Crew and cast played equally major roles in the resulting, strangely elusive form of the film: DOP Christopher Blauvelt, who worked on recent films by Sofia Coppola and Kelly Reichardt, production designer Elliott Hostetter (Spring Breakers), and above all Elle Fanning, John Hawkes, and Glenn Close, who turned in intense performances.

  • Roberto Flores Prieto – Pink Noise (Ruido Rosa) #KarlovyVaryFF

Roberto Flores Prieto – Director and Co-Screenwriter – Pink Noise (Ruido Rosa)

FRED meets the filmmaker Roberto Flores Prieto, whose film PINK NOISE (Ruido Rosa) had its European Premiere at the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Pounded with tropical rain, the streets of the Colombian town of Barranquilla are deserted. Behind the flickering lights emanating from inconspicuous buildings, Luis and Carmen make their individual homes. Luis is an old curmudgeon who earns a living fixing electrical appliances – but customers are few and far between, so the man walks about town posting ads offering his services. Carmen is a reclusive woman who works the reception desk in a remote three-star hotel – and one day her radio goes on the blink. A sensitive movie unfolding in a singularly atmospheric rain-soaked town presents two lonely people, one of whom is succumbing to desolation while the other holds on to a healthy enthusiasm and lust for life. Their coming together isn’t easy, but such things in life never are. Imbued with intimacy, the movie forgoes the usual barrage of dramatic events, preferring to part the haze of melancholy in order to show, by degrees, the cheerless day-to-day of protagonists whose age does not invalidate their right to love and to fulfill their dreams.

  • Jorge Pérez Solano – La Tirisia #KarlovyVaryFF

Jorge Pérez Solano – Director and Screenwriter – La Tirisia

FRED meets filmmaker Jorge Pérez Solano to talk about his latest film LA TIRISIA (Perpetual Sorrow) presented at the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

In the director’s first feature Spiral, husbands leave their wives behind to look for better paid work, yet they are unaware that they are destroying the very thing they are trying to protect. In La tirisia they discover upon their return that nothing will ever be the same. Cheba’s husband betrayed her twice: when he abandoned her in search of a decent wage, and then when he came back. During his absence Cheba and another local woman, Ángeles Miguel, became pregnant by the same man. In an environment devoid of love and compassion, the two women are now faced with an agonising decision: do they abandon their children or their partners? In a remote village in the desert, among the huge cacti, the director unfolds a metaphorical story of his characters’ agonising wait for opportunity: “In Oaxaca I saw a lot of children living with their grandparents because their mothers had abandoned them to live with another man. I wanted to explore this problem through the eyes of women who were trying to find happiness; at the same time I wanted to show that their struggle was futile, since these women eventually succumb to an illness of the soul known as tirisia – perpetual sorrow.”

  • Yorgos Tsourgiannis – Norway (Norviyia) #KarlovyVaryFF

Yorgos Tsourgiannis – Producer – Norway (Norviyia)

FRED meets Yorgos Tsourgiannis, producer of the film NORWAY (Norviyia) that had its world premiere at the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

It is 1984 and Athens welcomes the arrival of vampire Zano, pleasure-seeker, gin swiller and admirer of beautiful women. To the rhythm of Eighties disco music he uncovers the mysteries of the city and, apparently by chance, ends up in a bar named Zardoz, where any drug is there for the taking and the DJ brings the crowd to the edge of oblivion. His encounter with Nordic adonis Peter and temptress Alice heralds the start of a great one-off friendship. Yet the adventure they ultimately experience together surpasses all Zano’s expectations. He gradually realises that what at first looked like one big party is in fact an elaborate plot designed solely for him. Zano is subsequently faced with a tough decision: should he renounce his ideals and serve evil, or preserve his dignity, thus risking his own life? Using elements of steampunk in its artistic stylisation, this imaginative film could be taken as both a bizarre game or a scathing commentary on the situation in contemporary Greek society.

  • Asia Argento – Misunderstood (Incompresa) #KarlovyVaryFF

Asia Argento, Director and co-screenwriter, Misunderstood (Incompresa).

    Festival Section: Horizons.

FRED meets the filmmaker Asia Argento to talk about her latest work MISUNDERSTOOD (Incompresa), which was shown at the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Nine-year-old Aria is finding it hard to come to terms with her parents’ stormy breakup. Both are successful and famous, and both find their daughter equally inconvenient. While her two stepsisters use conformity as conciliation – one focusing on their father, the other on their mother – Aria isn’t welcome to live with either of her separated parents, and she continually shuttles back and forth carrying her bag and her black cat. In a story set in the 1980s, well-known actress and (since 2000) director Asia Argento explores the topsy-turvy life of a girl who, despite all her difficulties, holds on to her innocence. And although the director doesn’t deny that she drew in part on her own experiences, she refutes the idea that the work is autobiographical. She offers, “Who, during their childhood, never had the feeling of being misunderstood in the eyes of others, starting with one’s own parents?” Screened in Un certain regard at Cannes, the film attracted attention for its expressive style and Giulia Salerno’s performance as the young heroine.
