Nathan Silver – Director – Uncertain Terms

FRED meets up with filmmaker Nathan Silver to talk about his latest work UNCERTAIN TERMS, presented at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2014.

Young lives in turmoil in a film of inspired spontaneity Director Nathan Silver (Exit Elena, EIFF 2012) returns with another incisive, off-balance, semi-improvised account of Americans in search of redemption. At a rural halfway house for pregnant teenagers, new resident Nina (India Menuez) gradually becomes disaffected from her unemployed boyfriend while finding herself drawn to the home’s temporary handyman, a strong, silent type whose marriage is collapsing. Beautifully observed and fiercely idiosyncratic, Uncertain Terms confirms Silver’s growing status as a trailblazer of the new independent American cinema.

  • Mark Cousins – Life May Be #EIFF

Mark Cousins – Co-director – Life May Be

FRED meets the filmmaker Mark Cousins, who co-directed the film LIFE MAY BE along with Iranian filmmaker Mania Akbari, which was presented at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2014.

A heartfelt meditation on art and identity.
Two filmmakers carry on a correspondence in the form of essayistic films in which they consider some themes that are at the core of their personal and artistic lives: exile, the body, representation. As each filmed letter responds and spirals off from the previous one, the film becomes increasingly fervent and complex, interrogating the artistic process and identity itself. A free and bold film that unites two EIFF veterans: Mania Akbari (From Tehran to London, EIFF 2013) and Mark Cousins (A Story of Children and Film, EIFF 2013).

Florian Stetter – Actor – Stations of the Cross

The parents of 14-year-old Maria belong to a fundamentalist Catholic community and have raised her according to the tenets of their strict faith. At school, Maria must face the jeers of her secular classmates for trying to remain true to her religion, while at home she lives under the constant disapproval of her mother who demands ever-more painful self-abnegations from her. Filmed in 14 long takes corresponding to the 14 stations of the cross, this emotionally wrenching film is also a formal triumph.

Luis Miñarro, Director, Falling Star (Stella Cadente).

    Festival Section: New Perspectives.

FRED catches up once again with Luis Miñarro for a more in depth look at his very original take on the period film genre with his film FALLING STAR (Stella Cadente), from the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2014. We also look at how the film has been received at the different film festival it has been shown in.

A king overcomes his loneliness by indulging in playful adventures and carnal pleasures. A hallucinatory look into the brief reign of the Spanish king Amadeo I of Savoy in the early 1870s. Lacking the personality of a ruler and treated with contempt by his court, Amadeo withdraws into himself and becomes a prisoner in his own palace. To escape his loneliness, he seeks escape in playful adventures and carnal pleasures. A melancholic and funny period film amplified by saturated colors, extravagant sets and costumes, and a wild soundtrack that spans a century of music.
