  • Sandrine Kiberlain – Aimer, Boire et Chanter (Life of Riley) #Berlinale2014

Sandrine Kiberlain, Actress, Aimer, Boire et Chanter (Life of Riley).

    Festival Section: Competition.

French actress Sandrine Kiberlain talks to FRED about her role in Aimer, boire et chanter/Life of Riley, the new film of French cinema doyen Alain Resnais and his third adaptation of a play by British playwright Alan Ayckbourn.

In the midst of rehearsals for a new play, amateur dramatics proponents Colin and Kathryn receive the shattering news that their friend George is terminally ill and only has a few months to live. Life begins to come apart at the seams – not just for Kathryn, who was once George’s partner, but also for her friends Tamara and Monica. The full force of the emotional turmoil they experienced in their youth and their long-buried dreams are rekindled. Much to the chagrin of their respectable, middle-class husbands, the women begin to argue about which of them should be allowed to accompany George on a final journey …

By confining the action to an artificial, almost entirely studio-bound world, Resnais succeeds in creating a tragicomic theatre of vanities. Employing the ironic distance of a sage observer of human nature, the venerable French director ponders the power of love and desire and in doing so enables his characters, driven by their longings, hopes and obsessions, to leave the beaten track for once.

  • Donal Foreman – Out of Here #jdiff

Donal Foreman, Director, Out of Here.

    Festival Section: Official Selection: Irish.

Irish filmmaker Donal Foreman talks about his great coming of age comedy drama OUT OF HERE, which was shown at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival 2014.

Rising Irish star Fionn Walton (What Richard Did) plays Ciaran, a passionate yet restless college dropout who has returned home to recession-struck Dublin after a year of travelling. Broke and living with his parents, struggling to re-connect with the ex-girlfriend that he left behind and the friends and social scene that have moved on without him, Ciaran questions whether he should stay or go – and comes to realise the difference between being stuck and being present.

Out of Here is a contemporary coming-of-age story showing Ireland and its youth culture in a light not previously seen or explored. Timely and expertly realised, Donal Foreman’s debut feature is a pitch-perfect and resonant depiction of contemporary Ireland and its young people.

  • Avi Nesher – The Wonders (Plaot) #jdiff

Avi Nesher, Director and co-Screenwriter, The Wonders (Plaot).

    Festival Section: Official Selection: International.

Israeli filmmaker Avi Nesher talks about his latest with THE WONDERS (Plaot), which was shown at the Jameson International Film Festival 2014.

Lewis Carroll meets Carol Reed in this dizzyingly funny and fantastical farce from Israeli director Avi Nesher, about a good-natured slacker who becomes embroiled in a labyrinthine conspiracy.

Anything can happen in Jerusalem. Just ask Ariel Navon (Ori Hizkiah), a bartender, art-school dropout and compulsive cartoonist whose pleasantly mundane existence is turned upside down late one night after he spots a strange flash of blue light emanating from an apparently vacant building. His investigation yields an encounter with famed modern-day prophet Rabbi Knafo (Yehuda Levi). Is Knafo being held against his will? And who would do such a thing?

Veteran director Avi Nesher’s latest is a hoot. There are red herrings, unlikely alliances, and cartoons that come to life when no one is looking. The Wonders shows a kinship with the films of the Coen brothers and Woody Allen and the novels of Michael Chabon. Both Hizkiah and Miller are stand-up comics with impeccable timing, and they fully commit to creating complex, compelling characters with much at stake.

  • Pollyanna McIntosh – Love Eternal #jdiff

    Pollyanna McIntosh, Actress, Love Eternal.

    Festival Section: Official Selection: Irish.

Actress Pollyanna McIntosh talks about LOVE ETERNAL by Brendan Muldowney, which she stars in and was shown at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival 2014.

Based on the Japanese novel In Love with the Dead, from acclaimed author Kei Oishi (Apartment 1303, The Last Supper), Love Eternal centres on an isolated and death-fixated young man who tries to make sense of the world, and his existence, in the only way he knows how… by getting closer to death.

Brendan Muldowney’s second feature, following the award-winning Savages, is a dark and elegiac yet inspiring portrayal of a damaged young man trying to find his way in a world he no longer understands. Featuring note-perfect performances from Robert de Hoog and Pollyana McIntosh, Love Eternal is a rich cinematic experience, and, in his exploration of notions of life, death and the universe as a whole, Muldowney has created a bold cinematic landscape all his own.

  • Wes Anderson – The Grand Budapest Hotel #Berlinale2014

Wes Anderson – Filmmaker – The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Filmmaker Wes Anderson premiered his latest work “The Grand Budapest Hotel” at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival – and already people are calling it his ultimate cinematic expression to date. Distinguished by its usual perfectionist and symmetrical visuals, which make it delightful and beautiful, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” also benefits from a huge stellar cast – a star studded list that includes Ralph Fiennes, F. Murray Abraham, Saoirse Ronan, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray and Lèa Seydoux (we could go on…)

“The Grand Budapest Hotel” gravitates around the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous hotel from the fictional Republic of Zubrowka between the first and second World Wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.

  • Christophe Gans – Beauty and the Beast #Berlinale2014

Christophe Gans, Director, Beauty and the Beast.

    Festival Section: Out of Competition.

Christophe Gans talks about his own version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST presented at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival – Out of Competition. The film, starring Lea Seydoux and Vincent Cassell, is , in Gans’ opinion, a complementary film to the famous Cocteau’s one. As a great admirer of Cocteau’s, Gans always thought about getting deeper into some aspects that Cocteau had left out and treated more superficially. Though it is a family film, as Gans himself admits, the sexual undertones will be pretty obvious and relevant for the adults in the audience. Visual effects are impeccable and Vincent Cassell is the most handsome beast ever.

  • Margreth Olin – Cathedrals of Culture (Kathedralen der Kultur) #Berlinale2014

Margreth Olin – Co-director – Cathedrals of Culture (Kathedralen der Kultur)

    Festival section: Berlinale Special

Filmmaker Margreth Olin talks about shooting the Oslo Opera House for her segment in the ambitious and fascinating 3D documentary feature CATHEDRALS OF CULTURE (Kathedralen der Kultur), from the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.

‘If buildings could talk, what would they say about us?’ Cathedrals of Culture offers six startling responses to this question. This 3D film project about the soul of buildings allows six iconic and very different buildings to speak for themselves, examining human life from the unblinking perspective of a manmade structure. Six acclaimed filmmakers bring their own visual style and artistic approach to the project. Buildings, they show us, are material manifestations of human thought and action: the Berlin Philharmonic, an icon of modernity; the National Library of Russia, a kingdom of thoughts; Halden Prison, the world’s most humane prison; the Salk Institute, a scientific monastery on the California coast; the Oslo Opera House, a futuristic symbiosis of art and life; and the Centre Pompidou, a modern culture machine. Cathedrals of Culture explores how each of these landmarks reflects our culture and guards our collective memory.
