“Fingernails” is the second feature film by the Greek director Christos Nikou, which debuted at the 18th Rome Film Festival in the Grand Public section.
The film transports us to a peculiar and somewhat eerie future. Anna (played by Jessie Buckley) and Ryan (played by Jeremy Allen White) possess an authentic certificate validating their true love, thanks to a new and controversial technology. However, Anna remains uncertain about her emotions.
Anna decides to explore her doubts further by accepting a position at an institute promoting this unconventional love of technology. Here, she crosses paths with Amir (portrayed by Riz Ahmed).
Greek director Christos Nikou, known for the film “Apples“, makes his English-language debut with a tragicomic and dystopian story about human emotions that sheds light on the often undisclosed secret of romantic comedies: falling in love is the easy part while staying in love requires constant effort.
In an interview with FRED Film Radio, the director tells us why he decided to embark on this journey through the intricate web of human relationships and how the actors in his film, Jesse Buckley and Riz Ahmed, supported him by placing their complete trust in him.
Through songs and film references that also reveal much about Christos Nikou, “Fingernails” is poised to become a brief romantic treatise on what relationships should perhaps be today. Beyond representations, beyond the facades of modern society, love is still essentially a stolen glance, a hidden smile, a subtle gesture—small things that can still be more sensual than any blatant display.
“Fingernails” premiered globally on 3 November 2023 and is now streaming on Apple TV+.

From director Teemu Nikki (known for “Euthanizer“ and “The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic“), “Death is a Problem for the Living” an irreverent, very dark comedy, in competition at the 18th Rome Film Festival. The film features two gravediggers entangled in shady dealings and facing numerous family problems.
Risto and Arto, the two protagonists of the film “Death is a Problem for the Living”, could be said that they are complementary characters. Risto is a compulsive gambler who, due to his vice, risks losing his family and job. At the same time, Arto discovers during a medical examination that he was born with 85% less brain than the average, leaving him feeling empty.
Risto doesn’t know how to use his heart, and Arto has little brain. Yet, as explained by the two actors portraying them, Pekka Strang and Jari Virman, one must look beyond the simple categorizations of “either this or that” to understand Risto and Arto truly. They are two men desperately seeking salvation and escaping their difficult circumstances.
Pekka Strang and Jari Virman tell us that the key to the film, the friendship between Risto and Arto, was born from the great chemistry created on set: “You know when you watch a great movie, like ‘A Star is Born,’ for example, and you think, ‘Oh, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper had great chemistry’? Well, it went something like that between us.”
The film is distributed by I Wonder Pictures.

In “The Zone of Interest“, based on Martin Amis’ novel, Jonathan Glazer delves into the life of Auschwitz camp commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, talking about Holocaust, and offering a portrayal of “familiarity of evil”, as well as “banality of evil” as Hannah Arendt said.
Winner of the Cannes Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Prize, five nominations at Efa 2023 (Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter, Best Actress for Sandra Hüller and Best Actor for Christian Friedel), the film, presented also at Rome Film Fest 2023, has been selected as the UK’s official entry for the 2024 Oscars in the Best International Feature category.
“If we allow the suffering of others to be suffocated and hidden, then history is destined to repeat itself – Glazer said in Rome, thinking about the actual situation in the Middle East – The Holocaust passes through the film. We don’t see it, only with our mind’s eye, only with sounds and noises we imagine that suffering. I wanted to make this film intensely modern just because only in this way can that vicious cycle of violence be stopped. We cannot dissociate ourselves from that suffering like this family does, we must understand that it is something present and not so distant”.
“I hope young people see the film, they are the future. I know there are young people who saw it and had a reaction emotionally. They need to know what happened behind that wall. It is not difficult to perceive human suffering”, director added.
During the nine-year making of the film, Glazer thought about who these people were: “Like us – answered – They wanted a nice home, healthy and strong children. They weren’t monsters, even though I thought they were. They were human beings, like us, and they committed atrocities that we could do too”.
