PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews Nicky Lapierre, director of the film Astro.
It’s difficult to explain the wave of emotions that overwhelms you watching Astro. This intense and poignant film tells a love story (or what happens when it ends) through “visual patterns”, as the director Nicky Lapierre told us. The film tells his story but is also fictional. Is that a possible thing? The director is convinced so and explains how.
Astro: It’s been 7 years since non-binary director Nicky L. Lapierre told the troubled love story between Baby and Charlie. This story is the perfect starting point for a broader conversation on the creation of your own identity. It’s an experimental and non-conventional documentary, which combines fictional elements, real life images, personal experiences and unfiltered thoughts. The result is Astro: a queer and nostalgic road trip which doesn’t follow the traditional LGBTQI+ narratives, just like the lives of its two main characters

PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews Joseph Amenta, director of the film Soft.
In competition at the 38th Lovers Film Festival, Joseph Amenta’s debut feature, Soft, tells the story of a group of queer kids in a queer world who, an absolute novelty for the genre, don’t have to find out who they are during the film. But instead, discover the world around them. Dedicated to the queer community that becomes your family, Soft is a film full of joy at the”kids’ height”, as the director tells us.
Soft: Three queer adolescent friends find themselves in a difficult situation when they decide to sneak into a gay club in Toronto. To enter this promised land, insolent runaway Julien, lively Tony, and timid Otis decide to commit a minor crime, unaware of its indirect consequences: the disappearance of Dawn, Julien’s guardian. The three young boys start to investigate, and make unexpected, disturbing discoveries about Dawn’s life. This short debut film is intended as a sincere love letter to teenage friendship and a powerful proof of how persevering and adaptable the queer community can be.

PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews Todd Flaherty, director of the film Chrissy Judy.
Chrissy Judy is a black-and-white romantic comedy that tells the story of a great friendship and the desire to find their own way in the world. We talked about it with the director and star of the film Todd Flaherty, for the first time behind the camera, but also for the first time in the role of a drag queen.
Chrissy Judy: Judy’s been described as many things: a free spirit, a day dreamer, a boy-crazy hot mess. But this is going to be the summer it all comes together for this ambitious, 30-something drag queen/cater-waiter and his best friend, Chrissy. That is, until Chrissy’s priorities suddenly shift, forcing a disillusioned Judy to examine his life and priorities as a queer artist, and rediscover himself in the process. In this dark comedy, “Chrissy Judy” explores the universal pain of breaking up with your best friends and questions, “What do you do when your chosen family no longer chooses you?”

PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews Olivier Peyon, director of the film Lie with me.
Olivier Peyon takes Philippe Besson’s novel Lie with Me, which tells of a famous novelist who returns to his home country where he relives the memory of his first great love, and how transformed it into a moving tale about memory and remembrance that we leave of us. The director tells us how he balanced the aspects of the two stories, one set in the 80s and one in the present, and how he worked with the incredible pairs of actors: on one side, the young Guilaine Londez and Jérémy Gillet, and on the other Guillaume de Tonquedec and Victor Belmondo.
Lie with Me: Upon agreeing to be the brand ambassador for a famous cognac celebrating their bicentennial, novelist Stéphane Belcourt returns to his hometown for the first time in many years. Once there, he meets his first love’s son, Lucas. Memories come rushing back to him: irrepressible attraction, bodies becoming one in the heat of desire, a passion that can never be revealed… His first love’s name was Thomas. They were 17.

PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews Fabian Stumm, director and actor of the film Bones and Names.
Bones and Names tells of a couple in crisis, Jonathan busy writing his new novel, and Boris busy with the play in which he is about to star. Art mixes with life, and the lives of the two protagonists mix with those of the people around them, especially Jonathan’s young niece, who mirrors the inner turmoil of adults. We talked to Fabian about his directorial debut with this very personal story, how he worked on the visual identity of his film, how he inserted some meta-cinema scenes and, surprisingly, the Taylor Swift reference.
Bones and Names:Boris and Jonathan have been a couple for many years. When writer Jonathan gets more and more lost in his work on a new novel and actor Boris feels drawn to his younger colleague Tim during film rehearsals, they unexpectedly find themselves at a turning point in their relationship and begin to question their love. PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews Eduardo “Edu” Cortes, director of the film Hablame de ti.
Hablame de ti was a big hit in Mexico when it was released last October, and this is not surprising because it is not easy to find coming of age in Mexican cinematography. Although less coming of age with LGBT themes. And yet, Hablame de ti conquers audiences, often young ones, wherever it is screened, as happened at the 38th edition of the Lovers Film Festival. We interviewed director Eduardo Cortes who told us how this film came about, the challenges it faced, and how his film wants to connect with younger audiences.
Hablame de ti:Chava starts getting messages from a secret admirer. In the process he’ll find that there are secrets in his family that will help him to discover who he really is.

PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews Mike Doyle, director of the film Passing Through.
In his second feature film as director, Mike Doyle explores new genres and territories in Passing Through, an introspective film in which the protagonist faces himself and his demons. Doyle tells us how the idea for this very personal film was born, shot during a 10-day journey in which challenges and difficulties were not lacking.
Passing Through: After months of witnessing devastating loss, Mike finds he hasn’t the strength to leave his apartment nor the will to face another day of sickness and death. As a frontline healthcare worker, he has been stretched to his limit, and he can no longer bear the pain. Mike holes up in his apartment, stuck, deeply depressed, not knowing how he will emerge intact. As a pandemic rages outside his door, he slowly finds the strength to carry on and break free, and decides to embark on a journey across the country to rediscover himself and what he has lost over these past several grueling months. Mike orders some camping gear and tests it in his apartment. Everything seems like it is going to work out for him on this new adventure. But something is not quite right. Once on the road and isolated in the great expanse of America, Mike begins to encounter strange things. He wonders if he’s losing his mind or something more nefarious is at play. In the idyll of the open road, Mike confronts his past and breaks free of the bonds that have held him captive, only to discover that everything is not at all what he thought it was. Ultimately, Mike is released, but his catharsis retains a hint of mystery – was Mike the agent of change or a victim of his circumstances? Either way, he has passed through to something beautiful and new.
