A conversation with Arsalan Amiri and Ida Panahandeh, respectively director and co-writer of Zalava, the Iranian film presented in the International Critics’ Week section of the 78th Venice Film Festival. In this inteview, they talk about the central themes of superstition and tradition, as well as the troubles of the failure to communicate, and the start of their beginning of their creative partnership, which has lasted 20 years. Amiri also talks about the messages of his movies, making an observation on the fact that the film is as profound as it is entertaining.
Zalava: 1978, in a small village called Zalava, villagers claim that a demon is among them. A young sergeant who investigates the claim crosses paths with an exorcist attempting to evict the demon from the village. He arrests the exorcist on charges of fraud, but suddenly finds himself stuck in a cursed house with his lover. The villagers who believe they are both possessed by the demon, decide to kill them.

Halloween Kills: The Halloween night when Michael Myers returned isn’t over yet. Minutes after Laurie Strode, her daughter Karen and granddaughter Allyson left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie’s basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor. But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie’s trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster.

A conversation with Priyankar Patra, producer of Once Upon a Time in Calcutta, presented in the Orizzonti section of the 78th Venice Film Festival. The film is directed by Aditya Vikram Sengupta, who unfortunately was unable to make the festival due to COVID measures. In this interview, Patra talks about the film, which feels a little like a magnum opus and reveals Calcutta as a microcosm with its many colours and textures.
Once Upon a Time in Calcutta: After the loss of her daughter, Ela not only loses her identity as a mother, but also the only reason to be with her husband. When she is refused a home loan by the bank, her boss, owner of a massive Ponzi scheme, makes her an offer she struggles to accept. Ela reconnects with her stepbrother to reclaim her half of an old family theatre, but he refuses, blaming Ela for his own dark fate. In between all this, Ela’s childhood sweetheart resurfaces and gives her the warmth and hope for a new beginning. Just as Ela starts living the life she had dreamed for herself, she realises that she isn’t the only scavenger in the city brimming with hunger.
