PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Yonfan, director of the film No. 7 Cherry Lane.
Yonfan presented his latest film, No. 7 Cherry Lane, in the main competition of the 2019 Venice International Film Festival. This film also feels historic because it is the first Hong Kong production to compete for the main prize at the Venice festival in nearly a decade, the first film directed by Yonfan in about a decade and his first work of animation – though he likes to define it a “motion picture,” and he tells us why here. Also in this interview, the director talks about the sexuality expressed in this movie and what it is that makes it a love letter to Hong Kong and cinema.
No. 7 Cherry Lane: During the rise of the materialistic comfort of life in the 1960s, there emerges an undercurrent of danger in Hong Kong. Ji yuan tai qi hao tells the tale of Ziming, a Hong Kong University undergraduate, entangled between his amorous feelings for Mrs Yu, a self-exiled mother from Taiwan in the White Terror period, and her beautiful daughter Meiling. He takes them to different movies and through a series of magical moments on the big screen, forbidden passions are revealed. The era coincides with Hong Kong’s turbulent times of 1967.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Shannon Murphy, director of the film Babyteeth.
Shannon Murphy is one of the two women directors competing for the Golden Lion at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. Her debut film Babyteeth is a perfect mix between a coming of age story, a love story and a family one. Milla (Eliza Scanlen) is a teenager, she’s ill and could die. She has two soundly imperfect parents who constantly try to face their fear. She still has a babyteeth but her adolescence is kicking and screaming inside of her only to finally explode when she meets Moses (Toby Wallace), wild, impulsive, addicted to life, medicine and drugs. Moses is a breath of real life for Milla and rapidly becomes the only chance at living love before it’s too late. Shannon Murphy takes nothing for granted and explains how she keeps the balance between irony and drama, life and death from the beginning till the end. Colors, music and editing are in sync with Milla’s path.
Babyteeth: When seriously ill teenager Milla Finlay falls in love with smalltime drug dealer Moses, it’s her parents’ worst nightmare. But as Milla’s first brush with love brings her a new lust for life, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window. Milla shows everyone in her orbit—her parents, Moses, a sensitive music teacher, a budding child violinist, and a disarmingly honest pregnant neighbor—how to live like you have nothing to lose. What might have been a disaster for the Finlay family instead leads to letting go and finding grace in the glorious chaos of life. Babyteeth joyously explores how good it is not to be dead and how far we will go for love.

As the ceasefire is quickly broken, Marwan finds himself under the rain of bombs and takes shelter in a house with a group of elders. Suddenly, a group of Israeli soldiers enter the first floor. Shahad Ameen tells the story behind the fascinating film Scales her first feature film which was selected for the 34th edition of the International Critics’ Week in Venice. A fantastic and dystopian tale that carries a courageous social and political message, Scales is a mature debut for Aamen, who is surely not afraid of creating challenging and ambitious cinema.
Scales: Set in a dystopian landscape, Scales is the story of a young strong-willed girl, Hayat, who lives in a poor fishing village governed by a dark tradition in which every family must give one daughter to the sea creatures who inhabit the waters nearby. In turn the sea creatures are hunted by the men of the village. Saved from this fate by her father, Hayat is considered a curse on the village and grows up an outcast. Nevertheless, she does not surrender to this fate and fights for a place within her village. After her mother gives birth to a baby boy, Hayat must accept the brutal custom of giving herself to the sea creatures or finding a way to escape.

PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews Costa Gavras, director of the film Adults in the Room.
We had the pleasure to welcome the acclaimed director Costa Gavras in our Venice studios to have a chance to talk and know more about his latest film Adults in the Room, an astonishing rendition of what really went down between austerity-riddled Greece and the European bureaucrat-bots. Brilliantly written and with a commendable cast, Adults in the Room sheds a light to a chapter of contemporary European history that should never be repeated…and yet nothing has changed so far.
Adults in the Room: Behind closed doors, a human tragedy plays out. A universal theme: a story of people trapped in an inhuman network of power. The brutal circle of the Eurogroup meetings, who impose on Greece the dictatorship of austerity, where humanity and compassion are utterly disregarded. A claustrophobic trap with no way out, exerting pressures on the protagonists which finally divide them. A tragedy in the Ancient Greek sense: the characters are not good or evil, but driven by the consequences of their own conception of what it is right to do. A tragedy for our very modern time.
