Asteroid City: As a film is a team effort, this concept has even more meaning when it comes to Wes Anderson’s cinema counting on the participation of many great actors. This is what happens with Asteroid City, in competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival where Maya Hawke and Rupert Friend play, respectively, June, a school teacher and Montana, a musician cowboy. Asteroid City is the name for a dot-on-the-map desert town in the American Southwest in the year is 1955 but, we will soon discover that it is also a play in its preparation, directed by a renown director, played by Edward Norton. Maya Hawke and Rupert Friend are also two actors then, working on this show in the Broadway and Hollywood of the 50’s. Hawke and Friend talk about the innocent and sophisticated pastel colored world of Wes Anderson and how it felt to be cast in this film. The Nature of Love: She’s not only among the most famous Canadian actresses but Magalie Lepine-Blondeau is also director’s Monia Chokri’s best friend. As the protagonist of Chokri’s new feature film, The Nature of Love, Symple Comme Sylvain, at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, she plays Sophia, a 40-year-old philosophy professor, who, from a stable if somewhat socially-conforming relationship with Xavier ends up falling in love with her craftsman, Sylvain, who turns her world upside down. Magalie Lepine-Blondeau walks us into her work with Chokri on relationships, passion, cultural differences, trying to analyze answering the question: “Opposites attract, but can they last?”.

Shimmering Bodies: It is always a great emotion to discover new young directors making their cinematic debut, as in the case of Inês Teixeira with her short, in competition at the 62nd Semaine de la Critique, a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival. Inês was inspired by teenage memories to tell the story of Mariana, a shy teenager who is invited by her friend Jorge to spend a weekend at her house in Leiria. She will discover aspects of herself that she did not know. The director tells us about her first day on set, what she learned making her first film, and how it feels to be in such a significant competition as La Semaine de la Critique.

Emily Mortimer about the importance of failing: “Alive in the arts, but particularly in film as an actor, writer, director or producer. Anything is very difficult and it’s mainly going to consist of things not working and making a movie is the processes pretty much impossible. Getting the money to make the movie is pretty much impossible. The chances of making a good film are pretty impossible. The chances of that film, even if it’s good, being seen by anybody are very slim. It’s a crazy thing to do with your life. It’s more hope than expectation. But it’s all these reasons, I think a really beautiful thing to do, because everybody that’s here at this festival, everybody that puts their life into this kind of storytelling really believes in it and has at some point in their lives been really affected by a movie or television show or whatever that someone else has made. And I just find this kind of the beauty in this kind of everybody getting together to make things and nobody knowing the outcome. And it’s really in the face of so much adversity, yet people’s passions persists. And sometimes something magical happens and that’s what you hope and pray for but in the meantime, you go on an amazing journey with a lot of people who have light mines, and you probably fail but you fail nobly and beautifully”.

Research on audio description has undergone an enormous development in the last decade. Marina Ramos Caro, one of the speakers at ARSAD 2023, tells us more about emotions, objectivity versus subjectivity, and the role of ideology in audio description. Since 2007, ARSAD has been the meeting point for researchers, industry, trainers, trainees, users, practitioners, regulators, broadcasters, policy makers, social activists, cultural managers and anyone interested in audio description. ARSAD aims to be a thought-provoking event where we can learn about the present of audio description across the globe from multidisciplinary perspectives and where we can get a glimpse of the future of this fascinating access mode.
Marina Ramos Caro, PhD, is a Lecturer at the Department of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Murcia, Spain. She is particularly interested in the influence of emotions and personality in the process and reception of translation and audio description. Marina Ramos has been awarded several international grants, presented her work at international conferences, and published in journals (Journal of Pragmatics, MonTi, Translation Spaces, The Translator, Perspectives, Journal of Specialised Translation, Onomázein). As a professional translator, she has mainly worked within the fields of subtitling, dubbing, and transcreation. She is also the founder and director of Latrium, the Laboratory for Inclusive Translation of the University of Murcia, a project aimed at promoting the accessibility of the performing arts in the Region of Murcia by means of live surtitles and AD.
