  • Mark Cousins – The March on Rome #Giornate2022

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Mark Cousins, director of the film March on Rome.

Mark Cousins talks about his latest film, March on Rome, presented at the Giornate degli Autori independent section of the 79th Venice International Film Festival. The film depicts the ascent of Fascis in Italy and its fallout across 1930s Europe. Cousins also talks with us about his connection to Italy, masculinity and performance, and the archival centrepiece of his film: Umberto Paradisi’s 1922 propaganda film, A Noi.

The March on Rome: Through little-seen archival material and his characteristically cinematic analysis, Mark Cousins narrates the ascent of fascism in Italy and its fall-out across 1930s Europe. In The March on Rome, which is simultaneously an essay film and a historical document, Cousins contextualises history through the here and now, holding a mirror up to a political landscape marked by a creeping far right and manipulated media.

  • Greta Gerwig – White Noise #Venezia79

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Greta Gerwig, actress of the film White Noise.

Greta Gerwig is the co-protagonist, with Adam Driver, of White Noise by Noah Baumbach, opening film at the 79th edition of Venice International Film Festival. Based on Don De Lillo’s book of 1985, the film, despite talking about a world and an America of the past, feels like it talks about today’s world. Greta Gerwig confirms this intuition as White Noise, as Baumbach wrote, presents us with the strategies and routines that we’ve invented to make the idea of death acceptable”. The film also deals with another universal theme, family, depicting its chaos and rules.

White Noise: At once hilarious and horrifying, lyrical and absurd, ordinary and apocalyptic, White Noise dramatises a contemporary American family’s attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death, and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world.

  • Anna Eriksson – W #Locarno75

PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews Anna Eriksson, director of the film W.

What does W mean? We asked Anna Eriksson to metaphorically accompany us through the long corridors in which her new film is set to tell us about the suggestions that inspired her for this new visionary work.

W: Europe is a mortally sick woman who is killing time with her Chinese Man Machine. They are at their last post. Outside lies a snow-covered wasteland. Elsewhere, on a glacier is an institute, where a group of nurses are faithfully playing their regressive part in the execution of a new world order. Their trance is disrupted by a stranger. All is lost. The final act is about to begin.

  • João Pedro Rodrigues, João Rui Guerra da Mata – Where Is This Street? Or With No Before And After #Locarno75

PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata, directors of the film Where Is This Street? Or With No Before And After.

João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata tell us about their unique film, which retraces the footsteps of Paulo Rocha’s The Green Years through the streets of Lisbon. A film that is a modern metropolitan symphony but also a great declaration of love for the Portuguese Cinema and life.

Where Is This Street? Or With No Before And After: From our window one can see a set of the 1963 film The Green Years. This was our starting point: guided by Paulo Rocha’s gaze, we look back at the places of that film. The successive geological, urbanistic and social strata of Lisbon, besieged by the pandemic that interrupted the shooting, are drawn out in front of our camera, like a contemporary jazz impro from a score written in 1963.
