Saeed Roustaee comes to Cannes with his immense film Leila’s Brothers, in Competition. We talked about modernity vs traditions in Iran, the role of a woman and the family dynamics that are very similar all over the planet. Saeed is a lover of Italian cinema and he talks about his film references, as well.
Leila’s Brothers: At 40 years old, Leila has spent her whole life taking care of her parents and her four brothers. The family argues constantly and is crushed by debts, in a country caught in the grip of international economic sanctions. As her brothers are trying to make ends meet, Leila formulates a plan: to start a family business that would save them for poverty. While they are in desperate need of financial support, Leila finds out that their father Esmail has secretly been hiding a family heirloom. He had been saving it as an offering to become the new Patriarch of the clan, the highest honour in the Persian tradition. This uncovering will bring chaos to the already fragile family dynamics. As the father’s health deteriorates, the actions of each family member will gradually lead the family one step closer to implosion.

All that breathes:In one of the world’s most populated cities, cows, rats, monkeys, frogs, and hogs jostle cheek-by-jowl with people. Here, two brothers fall in love with a bird – the black kite. From their makeshift bird hospital in their tiny basement, the “kite brothers” care for thousands of these mesmeric creatures that drop daily from New Delhi’s smog-choked skies. As environmental toxicity and civil unrest escalate, the relationship between this Muslim family and the neglected kite forms a poetic chronicle of the city’s collapsing ecology and rising social tensions.

It is not the first time that Serge Bozon uses a reverse technique to explore a theme in his films. With Don Juan, screening at the 75th Festival de Cannes in the Cannes Premiere section, the director, following the idea of co-writer Axelle Ropert, tells the story of a reverse Don Juan who gets abandoned by the woman he loves and keeps being seduced and left by every other woman afterwards. The idea is to create a duet between two great actors: Tahar Rahim and Virginie Efira and explore the crisis of a macho version of the male figure.
Don Juan: Jilted on his wedding day, Laurent, a stage actor playing the role of the famous seducer Don Juan, cannot help but see his ex-fiancée in every women he meets. In an attempt to mend his broken heart and ego, he tries to seduce them all but none are receptive to his elaborate (and musical) advances. Meanwhile, at the theater, the leading lady quits and the production brings in Laurent’s ex-fiancée as the replacement.

In her dystopian story about a Plan 75 in Japan that encourages senior citizens to be voluntarily euthanized to remedy a super-aged society, Chie Hayakawa in the Un Certain Regard section at the 75th Festival de Cannes manages to create a dialogue with today’s world. We have no Plan 75 confirms the director but we all know that the situation towards the elderly people is not looking good. Hayakawa also describes how the pandemic affected her 5 years project development and how the film project was supported by Hirokazu Kore-eda.
Plan 75: In a Japan of the near future, government program Plan 75 encourages senior citizens to be voluntarily euthanized to remedy a super-aged society. An elderly woman whose means of survival are vanishing, a pragmatic Plan 75 salesman, and a young Filipino laborer face choices of life and death.
