  • Peter McDowell – Jimmy in Saigon #LFF37

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Peter McDowell, director of the film Jimmy in Saigon.

Filmmaker Peter Mcdowell have been wanting to find the truth over his brother’s death in Saigon for 12 years and now the result of his cinematic journey is Jimmy in Saigon, screening at the 37th Lovers Film Festival in the Real Lovers’ section. By interviewing the members of his family and some old friends of his brother, Mcdowell built his film little by little letting the emotions take over the mystery elements. As Tara Judah wrote in her review on ScreenDaily “Peter and his film are fuelled by the drive to make historical amends; to give visibility to queer love kept secret” and the Lovers Film Festival is the right place to celebrate this life and love.

Jimmy in Saigon: Jimmy was a boy who left for the Vietnam War and died under unclear circumstances in Saigon in 1972. His younger brother Peter McDowell, director of the documentary, was only five when Jimmy died and from that moment the whole family stopped talking about him. The documentary is the result of a 10-year effort to break the silence and the shame that was spinning around the figure of Jimmy. Through old photographs, letters and interviews with Jimmy’s closest friends, the director manages to bring an almost forgotten queer existance back to life.

  • John Madden – Operation Mincemeat

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews John Maddend, director of the film Operation Mincemeat.

It looks like a surreal story but it is based on true facts, Operation Mincemeat, directed by John Madden. The film had its world premiere in Malaga, its italian premiere in Bari at the Bif&st and will be released in theatres in May 12 with Warner Bros. The director confirms the film served also as an origin story to Ian Fleming’s James Bond/007. Operation Mincemeat oddly sees the participation of two formers Mr Darcy(s), Firth and Matthew Macfadyen and manages to build the suspence even though you can read from history books how the Operation ended, during World War II.

Operation Mincemeat: It’s 1943. The Allies are determined to break Hitler’s grip on occupied Europe and plan an all-out assault on Sicily; but they face an impossible challenge – how to protect a massive invasion force from potential massacre. It falls to two remarkable intelligence officers, Ewen Montagu (Colin Firth) and Charles Cholmondeley (Matthew Macfadyen), to dream the most inspired and improbable disinformation strategy of the war – centred on the most unlikely of secret agents: a dead man.

PODCAST | Matteo Ghidoni interviews Il Volo, singers of Il Volo Sings Morricone.

The Italian operatic pop trio talks about their new album entirely dedicated to the Maestro Ennio Morricone. “It’s the first time somebody sings the words on some the Morricone’s soundtracks. The words for the songs have been written but Andrea Morricone, son of the late Maestro. It’s an honor for us touring the world with this unique music and giving the voice to such a great piece of musical art. We all know Morricone’s soundtracks, but touring with them all over the USA, singing the melodies accompanied by actual words in front of an international audience, is a real sensation”.
