  • Joey Marra – Crazy, Not Insane #Venezia77

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Joey Marra, producer of the film Crazy, Not Insane.

A conversation with Joey Marra, producer of Alex Gibney’s latest feature documentary Crazy, Not Insane, presented out of competition at the 77th Venice International Film Festival. The film follows the research of psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis, who studied the psychology of murders. In this interview, among other things, Marra shares his thoughts on this being an important reflection on the death penalty.

Crazy, Not Insane: Why do we kill? Why do some of us kill, and others resist the temptation? What makes a serial killer? Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis, a psychiatrist who’s examined numerous serial killers, including Ted Bundy, sought to answer these questions. Her research videotapes, seen here for the first time, show evidence of multiple personalities formed from childhood trauma. Fascinated by the human capacity for ruthlessness, Lewis is a different kind of homicide detective, less interested in what happened than why.

In Between Dying: Davud is a misunderstood, restless young man in search of his “true” family, those whom he feels certain will bring meaning and love to his life. When, over the course of one day, he experiences an unexpected series of accidents with people that each time results in a death, invisible memories, narratives and concerns rise to the surface. Davud is propelled into a journey of discovery, failing to recognise his “missing half” again and again, until he finally comes to accept that living in danger is his fate, that death will always be stronger than his own narratives, and that shedding them is his initiation into entering life more fully. Set on the path of becoming, Davud ultimately returns to the place where he has always lived. There, he finds Love is waiting for him. But perhaps it is too late.

  • Kyle Rankin – Run Hide Fight #Venezia77

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Kyle Rankin, director of the film Run Hide Fight.

A conversation with Kyle Rankin, director of Run Hide Fight, presented out of competition at the 77th Venice International Film Festival. Here, Rankin talks about his motivation for making a film on school shootings and gun violence. He also talks about how he aimed contrast the trend of similar films by seeing it from the point of view of a heroine rather than the killers, as well as whether he believes the fact that the lead character is a young woman brough changes to the narrative and more.

Run Hide Fight: Zoe Hull, 17, has some unresolved issues. She’s not coping well with the recent death of her mother, sometimes chatting with her mom as if she’s still there. She resents her ex-military father for his seeming lack of emotion, but wears his army jacket every day like armour. Her best friend Lewis just asked her to prom, wanting their relationship to become something more than she can handle. All Zoe wants is to get through the last few weeks of her senior year and leave – off to college and a fresh start. Instead, her high school is attacked by four nihilistic, gun-toting students, who plan to make their siege the worst school shooting in history. The killers quickly gain control and round up survivors at gunpoint – turning an active shooting into a hostage situation and keeping police at bay. The ringleader, Tristan, captures the events via internet livestream, gaining the worldwide fame he craves. Using the skills her dad taught her, Zoe manages to escape, but risks her life to go back inside. With no plan and running on instinct, she saves who she can, until realising she may be uniquely prepared not just to help others run and hide, but to face down the shooters and fight.
