  • Amos Gitai – West of the Jordan River #Cannes2017

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Amos Gitai, director of the film West of the Jordan River.

Amos Gitai presents West of the Jordan River at the Quinzaine Des realizateurs at the 70th Cannes Film Festival. The filmmakers returns to shoot in the West End 35 years after he made Field Diary. On FRED Gitai describes the reason why he decided to go back to those places, what he was expecting to find and how he structured the documentary. What’s the role of filmmakers in politics? Gitai talks about the importance of individual action in every attempt of changing the course of political events.

West of the Jordan River: Amos Gitai (Rabin, Free Zone) returns to the occupied territories for the first time since his 1982 documentary Field Diary. West of the Jordan River describes the efforts of citizens, Israelis and Palestinians, who are trying to overcome the consequences of occupation. Gitai’s film shows the human ties woven by the military, human rights activists, journalists, mourning mothers and even Jewish settlers. Faced with the failure of politics to solve the occupation issue, these men and women rise and act in the name of their civic consciousness. This human energy is a proposal for long overdue change.

  • György Kristóf – Out #Cannes2017

PODCAST | Bénédicte Prot interviews György Kristóf, director of the film Out.

Slovaquian director György Kristóf, who has previously collaborated with such directors as Kevin Macdonald, Mark Herman, and the latest Berlin Golden Bear winner, Ildikó Enyedi, explains why he chose, in this debut film, to follow a character who belongs to the generation of his parents. He describes Agoston’s journey further and further ‘out” as a journey of self-discovery but also of personal enjoyment, and unveils a few sources of inspiration for the many odd but endearing characters Agoston meets, as well as for the magnificent cinematography (esp. in the industrial scenes), and the recurrent rabbit motif in this absurd, very entertaining existential tale, fruit of a rather challenging multilingual Eastern European shoot.

Out: after Agoston, a Slovaquian naval plant worker in his 5Os, is amongst the unlucky ones in a wave of redundancies, he sets off on his first trip abroad, to Latvia and the Baltic Sea, to try and find work, and himself. On this journey, he meets a series of absurd, colourful characters. With this debut feature combining poetic humour and a truly superb cinematography, György Kristóf is amongst the contenders for the prestigious Caméra d’or.

  • Eugene Jarecki – Promised Land #Cannes2017

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Eugene Jarecki, director of Promised Land.

As a special event, the 70th Cannes Film Festival presents Promised Land, a documentary by Eugene Jarecki . On FRED the director describes the genesis of the film and its being more about American history narrated through the representative of the American dream: Elvis Presley. A nostalgic but rational road-trip through America to talk about how people have changed since then and how American society became what it is today.

Promised Land: set against the 2016 presidential election, Promised Land takes a musical road trip across America in Elvis Presley’s 1963 Rolls Royce. The mission, forty years after the singer’s death, is to find the country he left behind – a nation that, like Elvis, started out young, beautiful, and promising, yet succumbed over time to the corrosive influences of addiction, money, and power. Promised Land paints a cultural portrait of the American dream at a critical time in the nation’s history. It explores, through music and verité, how a country boy lost his authenticity and became a “King,” while his country lost her democracy and became an empire.
