PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Paul Verhoeven, director of the film Elle.
After winning 2 Golden Globes and participating to the Festival de Cannes, Elle is finally in Italian cinemas and Paul Verhoeven was in Rome to introduce it to the italian audience. On FRED he describes his adaptation of the book Oh…by Philippe Dejan and how he got inspiration from his wife to shape the protagonist’s character and strength. Michèle (Isabelle Huppert) is a woman who refuses to be a victum and to be trated like one so Verhoeven comments on whether women are born with the necessary strength to fight these violences or instead, it’s an attitude they choose to acquire in life. Elle is a film about a woman who doesn’t follow any rules. She always tells the truth and it is on truth and cruel reality that Verhoeven sets the whole film, without judging the protagonist’s choices.
Elle: Michèle seems indestructible. Head of a leading video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes Michèle’s life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game—a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control.

Toni Erdmann: Winfried doesn’t see much of his working daughter Ines. The suddenly student-less music teacher decides to surprise her with a visit after the death of his old dog. It’s an awkward move because serious career woman Ines is working on an important project as a corporate strategist in Bucharest. The geographical change doesn’t help the two to see more eye to eye. Practical joker Winfried loves to annoy his daughter with corny pranks. What’s worse are his little jabs at her routine lifestyle of long meetings, hotel bars and performance reports. Father and daughter reach an impasse, and Winfried agrees to return home to Germany. Enter flashy „Toni Erdmann“: Winfried’s smooth-talking alter ego. Disguised in a tacky suit, weird wig and even weirder fake teeth, Toni barges into Ines’ professional life, claiming to be her CEO’s life coach. PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Raoul Peck, director of the film The Young Karl Marx.
FRED’s Chiara Nicoletti meets Raoul Peck, at the Berlinale with two films, his Oscar Nominee docuimentary film I’m Not Your Negro and The Young Karl Marx, screening in the Berlinale Special Gala Section. Peck reveals how analyzing Karl Marx’s early life and society at the time, can help people in the present not to make the same mistakes. Thre are so many similiarities in what happened in 1844 and what happens now and The Young Karl Marx, in Raoul Peck’s idea, should be seen as an educational film from which we should learn from. Peck also comments and elaborates on his decision of making a fiction film about Karl Marx, his friendship with Engels and the origins of the international Socialist movement, instead of a documentary.
The Young Karl Marx: 26 year-old Karl Marx embarks with his wife, Jenny, on the road to exile. In 1844 Paris, he meets Friedrich Engels, an industrialist’s son, who investigated the sordid birth of the British working-class. Engels, the dandy, provides the last piece of the puzzle to the young Karl Marx’s new vision of the world. Together, between censorship and the police’s repression, riots and political upheavals, they will lead the labor movement during its development into a modern era.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Michael Chernus and Kurtwood Smith, actors of the film Patriot.
FRED’s Chiara Nicoletti meets Michael Chernus and Kurtwood Smith, in Berlin to present at the 67th Berlinale the first 2 episodes of PATRIOT , a new Amazon original TV series. The two actors describe their characters, respectively the older brother and the boss of the protagonist John ( Michael Dorman) and comment on the presence of a TV show in a renowned film festival which can be seen as a sign that Tv Series are finally considered as important as films in the audiovisual world.
Patriot follows the complicated life of intelligence offi cer John Tavner (Australian newcomer Michael Dorman, Wonderland). His latest assignment is to prevent Iran from going nuclear, requiring him to forgo all safety nets and assume a perilous “non-offi cial cover”—that of a mid-level employee at a Midwestern industrial piping fi rm. A bout with PTSD, the Federal government’s incompetence and the intricacies of keeping a day job in the “front” industrial piping company cause a barrage of ever-escalating fi ascos that jeopardize Tavner’s mission. Patriot is in large part about the lesser known, unglamorous aspects of life as an intelligence offi cer deep undercover with work that frequently places John in untenable situations where he’s often forced to choose between bad alternatives. The unraveling of a plan, and the eff ort to conceal that unraveling, causes matters to complicate further.
