THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS. Set off the remote edge of Western Australia following World War I, a shell-shocked veteran devotes himself to his new job as lighthouse keeper, seeking solace in the solitude of the island. He intends to remain alone, until he meets a vivacious young woman from the town across the bay. L’ESTATE ADDOSSO. Marco, who has just finished high school, is worried about his uncertain future. His graduation summer will, as the result of a series of unexpected and lucky coincidences, lead him to spend twenty days in San Francisco. He travels with Maria, a girl from his own school who is considered conservative and pedantic. Waiting for them are Matt and Paul, two American boys with whom Marco and Maria will undertake some enthusiastic explorations which will lead them to come to grips with themselves and define who they are and who they want to become. When the time comes to say goodbye and go home, the four will have shared a unique, perhaps unrepeatable, experience of friendship, of growth and development that will stay with them forever.

Jorge is an unemployed boxer on the verge of losing his son and his wife, who has decided to return to Brazil. As a means of paying off his debt and persuading his wife to remain in Portugal, Jorge accepts a job with a debt-collection agency, which will drag him into a world of violence and crime.

  • Kasper Collin – I Called Him Morgan #Venezia73

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews director Kasper Collin, who talks about his new film I Called Him Morgan from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Having made a previous documentary on jazzman Albert Ayler, the director got into trumpeter Lee Morgan, famous for his work with jazz combo The Messengers, with Albert Blakey, and his own works as leader. The infamous event that ended his life, on stage during a concert, was his own killing at the hands of his wife Helen Morgan. Making use of a rare taped interview with Helen herself, guest contributions and plenty of archive footage, along with the music (of course), Kasper Collin’s I Called Him Morgan is a documentary by a jazz fan especially for, but not exclusively, jazz fans.

I CALLED HIM MORGAN – On a snowy night in February 1972, celebrated jazz musician Lee Morgan was shot dead by his common-law wife Helen during a gig at a club in New York City. The murder sent shockwaves through the jazz community, and the memory of the event still haunts those who knew the Morgans. This feature documentary is a love letter to two unique personalities and the music that brought them together. A film about love, jazz and America.

  • Jerzy Skolimowski – Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement #Venezia73

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Jerzy Skolimowski, who received a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

The great Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski received a Golden Lion lifetime achievement at the 2016 edition of the Venice Film Festival. Skolimowski is one of the pioneers of Polish cinema particularly attached to the New Wave of the 1960’s – alongside others such as Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polanski (with whom he collaborated) – among others.

We ask him about this and also his choice of taking 17 years off from him filmmaking; which leads to a conversation about his connection to painting and his need to express himself in this way, which is radically different from filmmaking.
