Aids, coming out, difficulties with parents: Holding The Man is a modern drama based on a true story. The film was awarded with a special mention at the 31st edition of the Torino Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. We caught up with its director Neil Armfield to talk about it.

HOLDING THE MAN: In 1976, Timothy Conigrave fell in love with the captain of the football team, John Caleo. So began a relationship that was to last for 15 years, a love affair that weathered disapproval, separation and, ultimately death.

With honesty and insight, Holding the Man explores the highs and lows of their life partnership: the intimacy, constraints, temptations, and the strength of heart both men had to find when they tested positive for HIV. The story opens at Kostka, Xavier’s junior [preparatory] school in Melbourne. Here, the author begins to sexually experiment with other boys, and comes to the realisation that he is gay. Several years later, on his first day at Xavier College (the Jesuit senior school), Conigrave sees John Caleo for the first time.

  • Actress Lena Magnien and director Emilie Deleuze talk about “Miss Impossible” #YAA2016

PODCAST: The young actress Lena Magnien interviews her own director, Emilie Deleuze, on the film Miss Impossible, one of the finalist films of the EFA Young Audience Award 2016

To listen to the interview, click on the ► icon on the right, just above the picture of the film

The French film Miss Impossible is one of this year’s finalists for the European Film Academy’s Young Audience Award. In this short but sweet podcast, the main actress of Miss Impossible Lena Magnien interviews the director Emilie Deleuze about the idea for the film and how it was to make it. Three smart young actors translate.

MISS IMPOSSIBLE (Jamais contente): They’re all nuts. Her parents, who want to send her off to boarding school. Her new teacher, who expects her to read impossibly old books. Her fellow band members, who make her sing ridiculous lyrics and dress her up in a frilly white dress for their first show. Everyone seems to know what she should do and how she should act. And it’s not like 13-year-old Aurore has any fundamental problem with changing herself either. Who would want to be like this: unhappy, ugly and emotionally withdrawn? But the others don’t seem all that much happier to her either. She definitely doesn’t ever want to be as old, rundown and lonely as her mother. And so she prefers to stay the way she is, to observe and make her biting comments on whatever comes her way.

  • Stefano Ferrari. Profession: Cinematographer

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews cinematographer Stefano Ferrari, who worked on two short films that will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner: Everything Will Be Alright and The Rhythm in Me.

To listen to the interview, click on the ► icon on the right, just above the picture of the film

Stefano Ferrari is a young Italian cinematographer based in New York. He has always been a firm believer in working hard, and working your way from the bottom up. At 16, he started working as an electrician for a major opera and theater production, that travelled all over Europe. Cut to 10 years later. He has now made the transition to cinema, and is a fully formed director of photography. Everyone who has worked with him, knows him as a deeply committed collaborator who brings that extra something to the party (along with his Italian accent) no matter how big or small the budget may be. His imagination and curiosity combined with his technical skills make him a versatile director of photography who truly loves what he does.

Along with talking about what led him to his point; his journey, his dreams and ambitions. His insight in the profession of a cinematographer also leads us to ponder about the importance of cinematography in general. What does it take to become a good director of photography? How important is it to share the director’s vision?

Two films presented and screened at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner – the section of the Marché du Film dedicated to short films – will bear his name in the credits. They are Everything Will Be Alright and The Rhythm in Me. With Cannes fast approaching, he tells us about the films, introducing them to us, and revealing his work on them.

  • Dietrich Brüggemann, director of “Heil” #fce2016

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Dietrich Brüggemann, director of Heil from the Lecce European Film Festival 2016.

To listen to the interview, click on the ► icon on the right, just above the picture of the film

With his film Heil, director Dietrich Brüggemann has shown people and international audiences that it is possible to portray Neo-Nazis, their misconception and crazy ideas through satire. It is possible to make a political film by not talking politics. With Burn After Reading and the Three Stooges in mind, Bruggemann reveals how satire was the only possible format for him to portray Neo-Nazis life stories of contemporary Germany.

The film was showcased in the new section of Festival del Cinema Europeo di Lecce: European Comedy.

HEIL: Welcome to Prittwitz. The acclaimed Afro-German author Sebastian Klein is on a reading tour in the East German backwater and is given a fitting welcome by local neo-Nazis: a blow to the head. Sebastian promptly loses his memory and parrots everything people tell him. Nina, Sebastian’s pregnant girlfriend in Berlin, is highly agitated. Without further ado she travels to Prittwitz and teams up with the village policeman Sascha to track down her boyfriend. He is in the hands of the neo-Nazis and their leader Sven and feels right at home among them. Smirking, he appears on talk shows and mouths the slogans that Sven whispers to him. A “blackie” railing against integration – the public goes crazy. And Sven sees himself finally on his way to becoming an opinion leader…
