  • Bouli Lanners #BRIFF2019

PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews director Bouli Lanners.

Bouli Lanners tells us few simple and yet essential things to do when cinephiles want to commit themselves into doing something concrete for our planet. If everyone did it, a real change would come.

He follows up the work of economists and nuclear physicists, supports the mobilization of youngsters on climate issues, fearlessly critizes the authorities’ inertia on social media… Bouli Lanners is on the frontline when it comes to global warming and the nuclear issue. At the BRIFF Bouli Lanners seizes his carte blanche to discuss these thorny issues and start the debate. After the screening of Fukushima, The Seal of the Sun, Bouli Lanners and Francis Leboutte (civil engineer and founding member of the association Fin du nucléaire) will meet the public to discuss the nuclear issue. The discussion will be led by the columnist Félicien Bogaerts (J-Terre, Classic 21, …)

  • Sara Summa, Ben Roessler – The Last to See Them #BRIFF2019

PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews director Sara Summa and composer Ben Roessler of the film The Last to See Them.

Director Sara Summa and composer Ben Roessler recount their experience while making Summa’s first feature The Last to See Them. A film that defy and standardisation in the realm of cinematic genres, The Last to See Them is a courageous meditation on life and its precious yet unsung moments. Even more so, when we all know the end is inescapable.

The Last to See Them: The Durati family lead an idyllic, secluded life in the middle of the countryside, surrounded by olive groves. Their daily routines are not particularly spectacular, although the eldest daughter is soon to be married and each of the family members is preparing for the wedding in their own way. The film makes no secret of the fact that father Enzo, mother Alice, daughter Dora and son Matteo will not survive the coming day. The knowledge of their imminent demise changes how the viewer sees their everyday actions, their plans both big and small. The fragility of life shines through and it almost feels like everything is slowing down. The smallest events are shown from different perspectives, lending them greater significance. The editing, music and tracking shots make the inescapable end appear like a trancelike countdown. Death and manslaughter are common film themes. By concentrating so radically on the “before”, Sara Summa tells the story of a brutal crime in an entirely unique way. Gli ultimi a vederli vivere is much more a tender tale of life than one of death. We’re the last to see them living.
