  • Zazie Beetz, Emma Tillinger Koskoff – Joker #Venezia76

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Zazie Beetz and Emma Tillinger Koskoff, actress and producer of the film Joker.

Zazie Beetz plays Sophie, the single mom of a 5 year old girl in Todd Philips’ Joker, in competition at the 76th Venice Film Festival. in the life of Arthur Fleck aka Joker, played by Joaquin Phoenix, she represents a chance of empathy in a world, of Gotham City, that lacks one. For Emma Tillinger, this is the first time producing a comic book film but she has always considered Joker as an exploration of the human mind as it stands halfway between a blockbuster and a arthouse film.

Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night… but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Lauren Greenfield joins us at our Venice studios to discuss about the unbelievable – and yet extremely true – story about Imelda Marcos and her family in The Kingmaker, screening here in Venezia 76 out of competition. From a character study to a real investigation into the past, present and future horrors of the Marcos Family in the Philippines, The Kingmaker is a powerful documentary the helps us to unlock the dangers that we are facing today and hopefully avoid the same mistakes we have committed in the past.

The Kingmaker: Centred on the indomitable character of Imelda Marcos, The Kingmaker examines, with unprecedented access, the Marcos family’s improbable return to power in the Philippines. The film explores the disturbing legacy of the Marcos regime and chronicles Imelda’s present-day push to help her son, Bongbong, win the vice-presidency. To this end, Imelda confidently rewrites her family’s history of corruption, replacing it with a narrative of a matriarch’s extravagant love for her country.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Laura Dern, Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver and Noah Baumbach, actors and director of the film Marriage Story.

“From the narrative structure of a divorce I was able to tell the story of a marriage”: these are the words through which Noah Baumbach describes the starting point of Marriage Story, in competition at the 76th Venice Film Festival. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson focus on explaining two very symbolic and yet delicate moments in the film, when their couple is really dissolving. Laura Dern plays the wife’s lawyer in the film and Baumbach gifts her with one of the best speeches/lines in cinema so far. Laura’s presence through her character is a statement that women can have it all or at least can try to achieve this completion.

  • Raymund Ribay Gutierrez, Max Eve Eigenmann – Verdict #Venezia76

PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews Raymund Ribay Gutierrez and Max Eve Eigenmann, director and actress of the film Verdict.

Director Raymund Ribay Gutierrez and Actress Max Eve Eigenmann join us in Venice to talk about their experience on Raymund’s first feature Verdict, here in the Orizzonti’s official competition. A gruelling journey through the harsh reality of bureaucracy in the common cases of domestic violence in the Philippines, Verdict avoids staticity in favour of a compelling and visceral style, where pain and frustration are tangible.

Verdict: Joy and her six-year-old daughter Angel live in Manila, with her husband, Dante, a small-time criminal. As so often in the past, Dante comes home drunk at night and beats Joy brutally. This time, he also hurts Angel. Joy grabs her daughter and flees to the local police post to finally get him sent to jail. Justice, Joy learns, takes time at best and is impossible to get at worst. Not without reason, she feels that she and her daughter are increasingly under threat.
