  • Emmanuelle Seigner – Heal the Living #Venezia73

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews actress Emmanuelle Seigner, who talks about her new film Heal the Living of the 73rd Venezia Film Festival.

Playing the role of a mother whose son was taken away from her could not have been an easy thing. Which is why, as Emmanuelle Seigner tells us in this interview shortly after the 73rd Venice Film Festival conference, when she was given the script of Heal the Living, she threw it away, never wanting to think of it again. Until one day, she met the director of the film, Katell Quillévéré, and realized she wanted to work with her.

The film requires a type of solemnity, silence and concentration that sometimes, one would presume, a set works against by its very nature. How did she find the challenge of working with this, and how did the crew and everybody on set help her out in achieving her final performance? Find out.

HEAL THE LIVING: It all starts at daybreak, three young surfers on the raging seas. A few hours later, on the way home, an accident occurs. Now entirely hooked up to life-support in a hospital in Le Havre, Simon’s existence is little more than an illusion. Meanwhile, in Paris, a woman awaits the organ transplant that will give her a new lease on life.

  • Andreas Dalsgaard – The War Show #Venezia73

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Andreas Dalsgaard co-director of The War Show from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Andreas Dalsgaard is the co-director of The War Show, screening in the Venice Days section of the 73rd Venice Film Festival. A documentary that talks about a group of friends from Damascus, headed and filmed by a woman who used to be a DJ and quits her job to join the revolution. Through her footage, we witness the evolution of Syria overtime.

The vast amount of footage meant that there were plenty of ways to use them effectively, and the collaboration between the two directors of the film led to the final process. The film is as shocking as it is effective in revealing the men and women that it follows as being quite similar to their so called “Western counterparts,” a label that, nevertheless, Dalsgaard seems to not be comfortable with overall – as much as his understanding of the label of “Western world” in general.

In this interview we discuss the reasons for Obaidah Zytoon to start filming, and the people around her as well.

THE WAR SHOW. In March 2011, radio host Obaidah Zytoon and friends join the street protests against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Knowing the Arab Spring will forever change their country, this group of artists and activists begin filming their lives and the events around them. But as the regime’s violent response spirals the country into a bloody civil war, their hopes for a better future will be tested by violence, imprisonment and death. A deeply personal road movie, The War Show captures the fate of Syria through the intimate lens of a small circle of friends.

YOU NEVER HAD IT. AN EVENING WITH BUKOWSKI. This documentary is based on a video interview conducted by Italian journalist Silvia Bizio in January 1981 with writer Charles Bukowski, at his home in San Pedro, California. It was a long night of smoking cigarettes and drinking wine with Bukowski and his soon-to-be wife, Linda Lee Beighle, talking about all kind of subjects, from writers to sex, love and humanity. The interview was shot on Umatic tapes, which were almost lost for over 30 years; they have been digitized and edited along with new shots in Super8 of scenes of Los Angeles today and poems read by Bukowski himself.

  • Alice Lowe – Prevenge #Venezia73

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews director Alice Lowe, who talks about her film Prevenge  from the 73rd Venice Film Festival [International Critics’ Week]

Alice Lowe is a talented and funny woman who decided that she wanted to do a movie, when pregnant, about a pregnant woman with a slightly deranged mind. And we are glad she did it! With an obvious love for B movies and slasher movies she created a funny but also intense portrait of a strange relationship between a woman and the baby in her womb. With a touch of splatter, that always works.

PREVENGE. Ruth is to be a single mother, for reasons which become plain, and is also suffering from the paranoid delusion that her baby is telling her to kill people – which she duly does, over and over again. Some of the people she kills are nasty, such as the creepy specialist pet-shop owner, and the 70s disco DJ who throws up into his afro wig. But some are nice and some appear to have no connection at all with Ruth’s current situation.
