Ana Sturm – Film Critic – Film Stage Studio.

Ana Sturm from Slovenia, one of the film critics who participated in the 2015 Talents Sarajevo platform, made a report for FRED Film Radio from Film Stage Studio – a cross-disciplinary training for a selected number of all participating talent professions by Gyula Gazdag and Mirjana Karanovic, which had its inaugural edition at the 21st Sarajevo Film Festival.

The 2015 Talents Sarajevo film critics share their views and opinions on Son of Saul by Laszlo Nemes, one of the films featured in the programme of the 21st Sarajevo film festival.

Plot: October 1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau. Saul Ausländer is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of large-scale extermination. While working in one of the crematoriums, Saul discovers the corpse of a boy he takes for his son. As the Sonderkommando plans a rebellion, Saul decides to carry out an impossible task: save the child’s body from the flames, find a rabbi to recite the mourner’s Kaddish and offer the boy a proper burial.

Stratis Chatzielenoudas – Director – Haunted by city lights

Film Critics – Miro Frakic, Lilla Puskas, Andra Petrescu

This year, as part of the Talents Sarajevo programme, FRED’s Matt Micucci mentored the film critics in the “art” of interviewing, reporting and reviewing for the radio, and how such practices compare with the construction of written criticism and film journalism. Miro Frak (Croatia), Andra Petrescu (Romania) and Lilla Puskas (Hungary) were part of the group that focused on interviewing.

For this interview, Miro takes over as host, and interviews his fellow critics Andra and Lilla on their experience at Talents Sarajevo, what they did, what they learnt and their impression of the Sarajevo Film Festival in general. The three then also give their insightful opinions on the state of film journalism and the cinematic culture in their respective countries, as well as the ways in which they think that cinema is promoted (or not promoted) in them.

Mirjana Karanovic – Mentor – Film Stage Studio

FRED’s Matt Micucci interviews Mirjana Karanovic, mentor of the first edition of the Film Stage Studio workshop of the Talents Sarajevo programme, from the 21st Sarajevo Film Festival.

The workshop is described by Talents Sarajevo as a cross-disciplinary training for a selected number of all participating talent professions, and was mentored by Mirjana together with Gyula Gazdag, both experts and educators in the field of acting and directing for both film and theatre. Mirjana tells us about it in more detail, by running through what happened in the course of its duration day by day.

She also draws her own conclusion and comments on the importants of workshops like Film Stage Studio, without hiding the fact that she hopes the workshop will be followed by a second edition at next year’s Sarajevo Film Festival.
