Have you ever wondered "Why is the internet like this?" We definitely have. In this episode, Halley and Annie will be using Michele Foucault's theory of "The History of the Present" to analyze 4chan's infamous Rules of the Internet. Halley and Annie argue that these unofficial guidelines of online use laid the foundation for the structure of the internet we use today. Discussions include women's objectification, color-blind language, hate comments, trolls, cancel culture, and if the internet really should be this way.

In this concluding episode of Chapter 2, Marina and Halley are joined by UCF Sociology Ph.D. student Kristal Johnson whose research focuses on racial inequality. Together they discuss how social progress is not linear, the importance of creating communities of resistance, the myth of “cancel culture,” and Black feminist knowledge of collective self-care and social justice. Part II concludes with a brief conversation about different ways to approach social change, including Marina, Halley, and Kristal’s personal philosophies of resistance.

In this episode, Marina and Halley introduce Chapter 2: "Redirect Your Outrage." After reflecting on the social problems that dominated public discussions over this summer, Halley and Marina introduce the "sociological imagination" and intersectionality as tools that will be applied throughout this new chapter as they break down social issues and the social structure that underlies them.

In this episode, we first introduce the three main sociological theories: structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. Building on our conversation about marginalized scholars in our "Intellectual Activism" episode, Dr. Jonathan Cox joins us to discuss the theories and scholarship of Black intellectuals like W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, and others who have been excluded from dominant spaces within academia throughout history. Finally, we also acknowledge the challenges marginalized scholars continue to face and how their perspectives are essential in helping us address racial inequality today.
