What is freedom? Coming from a context of widespread economic security, young people across the US and Europe in 1968 drove older generations crazy with the insistence that there was more. More than the grey flanneled conformity in which we were raised. Writer and translator Arthur Goldhammer’s article in The Nation asks “What is Freedom?” It is a reflection on how a generation tested the meaning of the word in that pivotal year in both the US and France. And without knowing it, carried on the radical exploration started by the Dadaists and the Situationalists of the early 20th century, rebelling against the dehumanization wrought by rigid conformity.
