Many try to reduce Christ to a manageable helper or moral example, but Colossians 1:16-17 reveals His true identity through three crucial truths. Finally, all things exist for His glory and purpose. Christ also existed before all things and continuously holds the universe together. Understanding these truths transforms how we approach work, relationships, suffering, and daily life, recognizing that Christ is Lord over every aspect of existence, not just our spiritual lives.

The Colossian church wasn’t denying Jesus—they were minimizing Him.

Colossians 1:15 confronts that tendency head-on. Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, the exact image of the Father, and the supreme Lord over all creation. He is not created. He is not optional. He is not one voice among many.

The Apostle Paul identifies three essential marks that distinguish genuine Christianity from mere religious activity: faith in Christ Jesus, love for all the saints, and hope laid up in heaven. These marks aren't produced through human effort but are supernatural gifts of God's grace. Faith means complete trust in Christ alone for salvation, not just intellectual agreement. Love for fellow believers demonstrates our faith, especially loving those who are difficult or different from us. Hope is confident expectation grounded in God's promises about our eternal future with Him. These three marks work together, with hope enabling both faith and love by anchoring us in eternal rather than temporary things.
