John 15:1-11 – True Disciples…

 

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ON EARTH!?

Anything you want before you die! 

 

Salvation!   (Being Saved… Accepting Christ… Making a commitment to Christ… Giving my life to Christ… THE sooner the BETTER!)

 

Salvation Definition =

* Deliverance from harm, ruin or loss….

* Deliverance from sin and it’s consequences.

* Deliverance from Satan, Self and the World…

* Deliverance from the Wrath of God.

 

SALVATION is the most important thing on Earth… 

In Salvation we receive the GIFT of GOD HIMSELF through the Holy Spirit.  CHRIST IN US!  In that relationship we receive the Gift of Peace!

* Peace of Heart…

* Peace of Mind….

* Peace with God!

 

 

Jesus and the Disciples are leaving the Upper room and on their way to the Garden of Gethsemane.

Jesus shares what it means to be a TRUE DISCIPLE!   I want you to be TRUE, not some fake, phony, put on…  I want you to be the REAL DEAL because I’m the REAL DEAL!  Here’s how you know.

 

John 15:1-17 – TRUE DISCIPLES…  The Vine and the Branches…

“I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. 7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!

8 When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father. 9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love.10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!

 

This is the 7th and Last “I AM” Statement of Jesus. Vs. 1 - I am the true grapevine…

* I AM the Bread of Life – John 6

* I AM the Light of the World – John 8

* I AM the Door of the Sheep – John 10

* I AM the Good Shepherd – John 10

* I AM the Resurrection and the Life – John 11

* I AM the Way and the Truth and the Life – John 14

* I AM the True Vine – John 15.

 

A “True Vine” implies there’s a false vine!  Satan’s # 1 tactic is to lie and deceive us, to lure us away from God.  He is the FATHER of Lies/Deception!  

 

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 –  Paul in speaking about False Prophets …  Satan disguises himself as a angel of light.  So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.

 

My Father is the Gardener, or Vine dresser…  John 15:2-3 - 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you.

 

Who are the Branches?   That’s us… People.

 

We’re all God’s Creation and Jesus died for everyone...

God Gives Good Gifts ~  John 14:25-31

Finishing up Ch. 14 today

JD mentioned last week that Ch 13 – 16 Jesus is giving his last instructions and encouragement before His crucifixion.  He was trying to prepare his disciples for what was to come and encourage them to remain faithful even when they couldn’t see how it was going to all work out.

Ch 14 Starts out by Jesus telling the disciples AND us to have an untroubled heart in a troubled life!

Let not your hearts be troubled!!!  We can have JOY in the mist of our trials and tribulations.

How? Trust in God, and Trust also in Me!

14:6 ~ I am the way, the truth & the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.

Then in 14:12   Jesus says something amazing: 12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done (Sharing his message of Salvation and restoration to the Father thru Him) , and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.

 ~  15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate (one like me), who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.

Greater Works is The HS within us leading us, empowering us, encouraging us to do the supernatural works that we can only do through Him!

The relationship we have will continue and be even better!!

Last week JD reminded us of the KEYS to the GREATER WORKS!

Vs. 15 - 15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.  

Vs. 21 - 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

Vs. 23 - 23 Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.

The KEYS that open the door to the Greater Works are RELATIONSHIP & OBEDIENCE!

... and the relationship comes first.

We obey out of OUR LOVE for Him!  

If it’s for any other reason, Obedience becomes a “got to” instead of a “get to”.

It’s just religious activity instead of Serving Relationship ~

Has to be from our heart and by His Power!

Our Obedience:  

Proves our love

Demonstrates our faithfulness to Him and that we belong to Him

Cleanses us from sin

Glorifies God

Leads to a life of righteousness

Leads to Blessing  

Christmas Season!!

It all ties back into the Holy Spirit’s work within us.

John 14:25-31 NLT ~ 25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. 28 Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am. 29 I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe.

30 “I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me,31 but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going.

John 14:21-31 - The “KEYS” to the Greater Work… 

John 14:21-31 – 22 Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?”

The Disciples were still expecting Jesus to reveal Himself to the Jewish leaders and establish an “earthly Kingdom” overthrowing Rome.  Remember, It was for this reason (Jesus NOT pursuing an Earthly kingdom) that made Judas Iscariot snap and betray Jesus.

 

Jesus purpose wasn’t to establish and “earthly kingdom.”   He came to die, to pay the price for sin…  (BTW… Jesus had already told them who He was and why He came…  and they rejected Him!)

 

John 14:23-26 - 23 Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. 24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. 25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you.26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

 

Three times in Chapter 14 Jesus tell us the “KEYS to the GREATER WORK!”   How He and the Father will reveal Themselves to us…    

Vs. 15 - 15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.

Vs. 21 - 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

Vs. 23 - 23 Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. 24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me.

 

Relationship and Obedience!  Notice the Relationship is first…  

* IF you love me…

* The ones who love me…

* All who love me…

We obey out of LOVE For Him as a result of who He is and what He did for us on the Cross!

 

We don’t obey out of Fear, Guilt, Duty, or Obligation…  that type of obedience won’t last… it just brings frustration, confusion and misery.

 

The Relationship is critical…  to Obedience!

2 Peter 1:3-11 - 3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4 And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.  (Which is sin… disobedience to God!)

5 In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. (Obey!)  Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 8 The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.

10 So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen.

John 14 – 12-21 – A Greater Work!

Recap… 

* In John 13, Jesus has the Passover meal with His Disciples, (The Lord’s Supper.)

 

* Jesus gets up and does the unimaginable… the unthinkable… He washes their feet…  Jesus, the Messiah, the Lord…  washes their feet!

 

* He tells them… As I have done to you, you do for each other.  Wash each other’s feet (Do life together, Be a “Battle Ready Brotherhood, who will NOT let enemy (satan) gain any ground!  Now that you know these things you are blessed if you do them! 

 

* He shares that one of them will betray Him. They’re disturbed by that…  wondering who it could be… but then start talking about who’s the greatest!

 

* Jesus shares that He’s going to leave them, and they can’t come with Him. (He’s going to the Cross, to be the sacrifice for all sin!)

 

* He gives a new command: Love one another, just as I have loved you. By this everyone will know that you are my Disciples, if you love one another.

 

* Peter says, Lord, where are you going? You can’t come with me now Peter, but you will follow me later.  But, why can’t I come with you now Lord?  I’ll die for you!

 

* Peter, you will deny me 3 times before the sun rises!

 

They don’t have a clue as to what’s about to take place.  Jesus is comforting and encouraging them…

John 14:1-11 -“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?  3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. 7 If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is.  From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”

9 Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you?

10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me.11 Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.

Remember, the whole purpose for John writing these things… is that we would Believe! John 20:31, But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

 

 

John 14:12-21 – A Greater work…

 12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes (to “act” on what we Believe through Trust and Faith and Obedience...  James Macdonald quote.) will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.

 

If you believe in me, trust in me, have faith in me and obey me you will do the same works I’ve done, and even greater works…  because I am going to the Father.  

 

Does Jesus mean we’re going to perform the same signs/miracles that he performed… 

John 14:1-7  An Untroubled Heart in a Troubled Life

Review Ch 13~

Jesus washes his disciples’ feet.

• Example of what we should do for each other!

• Picture of humility and service done out of love for one another.

• Picture of doing life together and cleaning the junk/sin off of each other.

• V17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them!

Jesus is deeply troubled.

• He’s about to be betrayed by Judas Iscariot.  

• Jesus tells him to hurry and do what you’re going to do.

• There’s a little bit of Judas in all of us!

Jesus announces his time has come.

• As soon a Judas left he tells that his time has come to enter into his Glory

• God would be glorified because of him.

• V33 Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer.And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you can’t come where I am going.

• V34 New commandment: Just as I have loved you, you should love one another.

• V35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.

Jesus predicts Peter’s denial.

• Simon Peter: “Lord, where are you going?”

• You can’t go with me now, but you will follow me later.

• Why Lord?  I’m ready to die for you!!!

• Jesus answered, “Die for me? I tell you the truth, Peter—before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.

This is the backdrop for ch. 14

• One of Jesus’ disciples is about to betray Him.

• He’s going to be leaving them.

• They can’t go with him.

• Peter is going to deny that he even KNOWS Jesus, much less willing to die for him!

• After 3 ½ years, Jesus is just gonna go away!!! What have we done all this for?!?

Title: An Untroubled Heart in a Troubled Life!

Jesus knows their hearts are hurting, that they’re confused….

He tells them: “Don’t let your hearts be troubled”

But He doesn’t stop there, He tells them, and us, HOW to not let our hearts be troubled!

How to have JOY in the mist of our trials and tribulations.

John 14:1-11 nlt ~

 “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. As we walk through our scripture, don’t miss His patience and compassion with their doubts and confusion.

"John 13:21-38 - An Expectation to Live"

 

John 13:21-38 –

Jesus and the Disciples are enjoying their last meal together…   A farewell supper (the Disciples don’t know that)   In John 13, we have some powerful words, an example and an expectation that Jesus leaves with His Disciples (and us!)

 

RECAP – John 13:14-17

14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done for you. 16 “Truly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him.17  If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

 

Unless we HUMBLE ourselves and WASH each other’s feet (Do Life Together) We aren’t going to Please the Lord…  We don’t honor Him as we should and we aren’t following in His example!  

 

I don’t think we will ever become the people He wants us to Become.

 

AND, if we will humble ourselves and do that… we will be “blessed!”

 

John 13:18-22 NLT - 18 “I am not saying these things to all of you; I know the ones I have chosen. But this fulfills the Scripture that says, ‘The one who eats my food has turned against me.’ (Psalm 41:9)  19 I tell you this before hand, so that when it happens you will believe that I AM the Messiah. (Or that I AM, or the I AM has come.)  20 I tell you the truth, anyone who welcomes my messenger is welcoming me, and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming the Father who sent me.”

21 Now Jesus was deeply troubled, (He knew what was coming. The Cross.) and he exclaimed, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me!” (Jesus was troubled in spirit at the fact that one of his own would not repent and spend eternity separated from God forever.)

22 The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he could mean.

 

Luke 22:21-27 - 21 “But here at this table, sitting among us as a friend, is the man who will betray me.22 For it has been determined that the Son of Man must die. But what sorrow awaits the one who betrays him.”23 The disciples began to ask each other which of them would ever do such a thing. 24 Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them.25 Jesus told them, “In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called ‘friends of the people.’ 26 But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.27 Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.

 

Jesus has just given them an example to follow….  An example of Humility and Doing Life Together…  He reveals that one of them would betray Him…  Here they are arguing about who’s the greatest! 

 

John 13:23-30 - 23 The disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Jesus at the table. (Probably John)  24 Simon Peter motioned to him to ask, “Who’s he talking about?” 25 So that disciple leaned over to Jesus and asked, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus responded, “It is the one to whom I give the bread I dip in the bowl.” And when he had dipped it, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.27 When Judas had eaten the bread, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus told him, “Hurry and do what you’re going to do.” 28 None of the others at the table knew what Jesus meant. 29 Since Judas was their treasurer, some thought Jesus was telling him to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the poor.30 So Judas left at once, going out into the night.

 

John 13:1-17 – An Example to Follow…

It was during this time after Chapter 12… before Chapter 13 that Judas goes to the Religious leaders.  Matt. 26:14-16 - 14 Then one of the Twelve, the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” So they weighed out thirty pieces of silver for him.16 And from that time he started looking for a good opportunity to betray him.

Jesus has His Disciples prepare for the Passover Meal. (It’s in all four Gospels) Luke 22:7-13 -  7 Then the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.8 Jesus sent Peter and John,saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” 9 “Where do you want us to prepare it?” they asked him. 10 “Listen,” he said to them, “when you’ve entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters. 11 Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, “Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?”’12 Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs. Make the preparations there.”13 So they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

John 13: 1-20 – 1Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.  

• Here in Chapters 13-17 Jesus focus is on His Followers and Disciples, and I believe it’s one of the most powerful sections of the New Test. for “Followers” of Christ.

• All of God’s Love is expressed in the person of Jesus Christ!   And, He never gives up on us, never stops loving us…  

2 Now when it was time for supper, the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, to betray him. 

• Judas was just waiting for the right time to deliver Jesus to the Religious leaders.

3 Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his hands, that he had come from God, and that he was going back to God. 

• Jesus knew what was coming…  He was able to face it and endure it because He knew who He was, where He was from and He was going back to God… to be restored to His throne and His Lordship.  

• The same is true of us when we belong to God!  When we KNOW Him and KNOW we belong to HIM, we CAN face the trials, the suffering and endure hardship because we know we’re going to the Father and we also will be exalted if we remain steadfast and Obey!  

John 13:4-5 - 4 So he (Jesus) got up from supper, laid aside his outer clothing, took a towel, and tied it around himself. 5 Next, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around him.

• It was customary for a host to provide water for their guest to clean up, wash up.

• Walking in sandals in this area was dusty, dirty… you didn’t want to recline at the table and eat with someone who hadn’t washed up!

• Usually washing feet was reserved for the lowest slave or servant or sometimes if there was no slave/servant one of the first guests would humble themselves and handle the task.

• When Jesus gets up to wash their feet they’re in shock!   They were embarrassed.  Jesus washing OUR feet!  Jesus is doing the work of one of the lowest of slaves?!

• None of the Disciples were going to wash each other’s feet.  They weretoo proud.  They would have gladly washed Jesus feet but not each other’s feet!  

John 13:6-8 - 6 He (Jesus) came to Simon Peter, who asked him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I’m doing you don’t realize now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 “You will never wash my feet,” Peter said. Jesus replied, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.”

Peter didn’t see the spiritual significance of what Jesus was doing...

John 12:27-50 What Honors God the Most?

 

John 12:1-8

Mary’s worship of Jesus was extravagant.

She gave all she had.

John 12:9-28  ~ “Jesus Time Had Come”

Large crowds of Jews come to Bethany because Jesus raised Lazarus & the priests had decided to kill Lazarus too!!

Lazarus was living proof that Jesus is who he said he is!

* When we respond by coming out of the Grave… (Salvation) When we’re unwrapped of our grave clothes (Growing, Developing, and Maturing in Christ (Discipleship!) we can expect opposition and persecution!  

Our lives should be living proof that Jesus is the Christ, the Savior.

How we live & what we say should be drawing people to Jesus!!

Triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

Bringing salvation – Spiritual FREEDOM to the world!

 

The Jews were expecting him to be their Conquering King, freedom from Rome.

Jesus Explains A seed must be is planted in the ground and die to produce a plentiful harvest of new life.

That unless he dies and raises again, salvation doesn’t come to the world.

It seems like another paradox of our faith… How can Death Bring Life?

There’s a difference between believing there’s a God or even that Jesus is God; and following Him as Lord of your life.

 

27 “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!”

 

* Mary’s worship was extravagant.

* Jesus was obedient to the cross.

* From Jesus death comes our forgiveness.

* From our dying to ourselves and following him, we experience the new life he has for us and we continue his ministry of reaching out to those that don’t know him and introducing them to Jesus.

 

* Ch 12 ~ Our lives should be an act of extravagant worship lived in obedience to Jesus, that brings Honor & Glory to God!

 

Question: What honors God the most??   About what?  Anything!   Everything!

 

So that’s where we pick up this week!

 

Because when we Honor God with our lives, He gets the Glory!!

Because it’s God’s Glory that drew us to Him!

It’s the Glory of God shining in us that will draw others to Him!

 

2 Cor 4:6-7 ~ 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.  7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

 

We all need:

Get a better grip on God’s Glory.  Because it’s how he is made known.

We should be in AWE of His Glory!

 

Glory of God definition:

Got Questions ~ The glory of God is the beauty of his spirit, the beauty that emanates from His character, from all that He is.
