In a culture fueled by outrage, division, and constant online conflict, followers of Jesus face a critical question: Will we reflect the love of Christ or mirror the divisions of the world around us?
In this message, Choosing Unity in a Divided World, we explore the powerful prayer Jesus prayed the night before the cross in John 17:20–23. At one of the most important moments in His earthly ministry, Jesus didn’t pray for miracles, church growth, or protection. Instead, He prayed that His followers would be one.
Why was unity so important to Jesus?
Because the credibility of the Gospel is connected to the unity of His people. When believers live in love and unity, the world can clearly see the transforming power of Christ. But when the church becomes divided over politics, preferences, and secondary issues, our witness becomes weakened.
This sermon examines how Christians can pursue unity without sacrificing conviction. Through Scripture, we discover three foundational truths that help believers stay united even in a divided world:
We have one enemy.
According to Ephesians 6:12, our struggle is not against people but against spiritual forces of darkness. Other believers are not the enemy.
We have one mission.
Jesus commanded His followers to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). The church’s mission is not to win arguments but to lead people to Christ.
We have one strategy.
Jesus said the world will recognize His disciples by how they love one another (John 13:34–35). Love is the defining mark of true followers of Christ.
Unity does not mean uniformity. Christians may differ in preferences, personalities, and perspectives, but what unites us in Christ is far greater than anything that divides us. When the church focuses on the Gospel and chooses love over division, we become a powerful witness to a watching world.
A church that pleases God is a unified church—a community of believers committed to loving one another, staying focused on the mission of Christ, and refusing to let division distract from the message of the Gospel.
Join us as we discover how choosing unity allows the church to reflect the heart of Jesus and demonstrate His love to the world.
