  • You Are The Real Deal - Overcome Imposter Syndrome

I need to tell you about a conversation that happened in a coffee shop four years ago that completely changed how I see myself – and my business.

I was drowning in self-doubt. "I'm not enough. Someone else knows more than me. Who am I to teach this?"

My friend put her fist down on the table, looked me dead in the eye, and said five words that I didn't believe at the time: "You are the real deal."

I'm sharing this because I know you're holding yourself back from something right now. Maybe it's launching that offer. Maybe it's raising your prices. Maybe it's finally putting yourself out there as the expert you actually are.

And there's a voice in your head saying you're not ready. Not qualified enough. Not experienced enough.

Here's what I learned: That voice? It's actually proof you're NOT the problem you think you are.

    In this episode, I'm sharing:

    • The phrase I say to myself in the mirror when imposter syndrome creeps in (it feels weird at first, but it works)
    • Why your self-awareness is actually evidence that you're the real deal
    • The "energetic bank account" concept that explains why this takes time (and why that's okay)

The truth is: It took me four years from hearing "you're the real deal" to actually FEELING like the real deal. But now? I'm there. And I want to shortcut that journey for you.

If you're waiting to feel qualified before you step into your calling, this episode will help you stop waiting.

You are already the real deal. Now let me show you how to believe it.

  • How to Get ROI From Ads (Even in a Crowded Market) with John Horn

Friend, I know you're seeing ads everywhere telling you ads are dead, this strategy is dead, that tactic doesn't work anymore. It's hard to know what to do anymore or who to trust.

That's why I brought on John Horn from Stub Group to have a real conversation about how you can actually experience ROI from your ads – even if you're in a crowded, competitive market.

In this episode, we dig into:

Why I wanted John specifically: His agency has worked with over 2,000 clients and overseen a couple hundred million dollars in ad spend across platforms like Google, Meta, and Microsoft. If anyone knows what's working right now, it's him.

Where to start with platforms: Google vs. Meta vs. TikTok – which one is right for YOUR business? John breaks down when to use search-based platforms (Google) versus visual discovery platforms (Meta/Instagram). Spoiler: It depends on whether people are actively searching for what you sell or if you need to introduce them to it.

The AI question I had to ask: Is AI helping or hindering the ad process? John breaks AI into two categories – the targeting/bidding AI (which has improved exponentially) and why you still need human oversight to catch when the algorithm gets it wrong. Example: If you're a tree service, you don't want to pay for clicks from people searching "Dollar Tree."

Does the AI actually track conversions? Yes! John explains how the platforms can see when a search term leads to a purchase (without seeing your private info) and how you can double down on what's working.

The profitability framework: I asked John the technical question everyone wants to know – what percentage of revenue should you spend on ads? His answer surprised me. It's not a one-size-fits-all percentage. He walks through the difference between e-commerce businesses (where margins are fixed) versus service businesses (where overhead is already covered). The goal is finding the "water level" between volume and profit per transaction.

Before you spend a dime on ads: John's process for starting smart:

    1. What's actually working best in your business right now? Start there, not with all five services you offer
    2. Define what success looks like – are you driving calls, quotes, foot traffic? What can you afford to pay per lead?
    3. Do the math BEFORE you start spending (if clicks cost $10 and you can only afford $5 per lead, don't do it)

Timeline for results: You'll see traction immediately (people clicking or not), but give yourself at least 3 months to prove concept and reach profitability. Some businesses get there faster, but that's the realistic runway.

The Google Analytics piece: John's team sets up analytics for every client because the website experience is CRITICAL. You can't just focus on ads and ignore what happens when people land on your site. One insight I loved: There's often a disconnect between the words businesses use (like "arborist") and the words consumers search for (like "tree service"). If your landing page doesn't match search intent, you're wasting money.

What NOT to do (this is gold):

❌ Don't take platform "best practices" as gospel – They're often best practices for making the PLATFORM more money, not you. Those little checkboxes Google suggests? Read them carefully.

❌ Don't view ads as a magic bullet – John describes ads as "fuel for your fire." If your pricing is wrong or your sales process is broken, ads will just send more people through a broken system. Fix your business first, then pour fuel on it.

❌ Don't chase every shiny new thing – Yes, test new features, but don't abandon tried-and-true strategies that work. Use maybe 10-20% of budget for testing, keep the rest on proven workhorses.

The Google suspension issue: I had to ask about this because it's terrifying – last year almost 40 MILLION ad accounts got suspended by Google. John explains it's usually not because competitors reported you, but because Google's automated systems are trying to catch scammers and legitimate businesses get caught in the crossfire. Stub Group specializes in helping people get reinstated.

Why ad costs keep rising: I went on a bit of a tangent about how Google and Meta have created quite the profitable system – as more advertisers join, they can keep raising prices. John confirmed costs per click do increase year over year, which is why sophistication in targeting and messaging is more important than ever.

YouTube ads insight: Costs are typically much lower on YouTube than Google search because you're not targeting someone actively searching to buy RIGHT NOW. You're higher in the funnel building awareness. But Google's targeting is so good (because they know what you've been searching) that YouTube can still drive direct conversions for many businesses.

The bottom line: Ad platforms are mature and competitive. You can't just throw money at them and hope for results anymore. But with the right strategy, clear understanding of your numbers, and smart targeting, ads can absolutely work – even in crowded markets.

    About John Horn:

John Horn has spent over a decade in digital marketing and advertising, specializing in helping businesses navigate the complex world of paid advertising across platforms like Google, Meta (Facebook/Instagram), and Microsoft. As a leader at Stub Group (where he was employee #1), John has helped build an agency that's worked with over 2,000 clients and overseen hundreds of millions of dollars in ad spend.

Stub Group was founded to help businesses make the transition from traditional advertising to digital advertising effectively – figuring out how to spend dollars wisely and avoid waste. The agency focuses on Google Ads, SEO, email marketing, and has developed a unique specialty in helping businesses whose ad accounts have been suspended by Google (which happened to nearly 40 million accounts last year).

What sets John apart is his front-row seat to the economy through agency work – he's seen thousands of different business models, revenue streams, and approaches. This gives him unique insights into what works across industries, niches, and business types. He emphasizes that ads are "fuel" for your business, not a magic bullet – they amplify what's already working but can't fix fundamental business problems.

John believes the most successful agencies are those that constantly learn and test new features as platforms evolve, while maintaining a healthy skepticism about platform "best practices" that often benefit the platform more than the advertiser. His approach focuses on sophisticated targeting, clear ROI metrics, and finding the "water level" between transaction volume and profit margins that maximizes profitability for each unique business.

  • 3 Effective Ways To Leverage Other Peoples Audiences to Expand Your Reach

Friend, are you tired of hustling on social media, feeling like you're talking to the same people over and over with average results?

I get it. You're creating content every single day. You're spending hours preparing, publishing, getting it out there. Maybe you're even running ads to get new eyeballs. You're doing all the right things.

But today I want to share three powerful strategies that will help you expand your reach and get in front of new audiences – without expensive or time-consuming systems.

    Why this matters:

These aren't just audience expansion tactics. These are authority-building, trust-building strategies. Unlike running ads to cold audiences (which is hard and costly), these methods will quickly establish you as the authority in your niche and create a transfer of trust that leads to clients who genuinely want to work with you.

Strategy #1: Podcast Guesting (This is THE one)

If you only do one thing from this episode, do this. Podcast guesting is huge, powerful, and can be completely free – whether you have your own podcast or not.

When you're a guest on someone else's podcast, you get 30-40 minutes to share your story and personality. People resonate with you, and because they already trust the host, that trust instantly transfers to you.

How to get booked (3 ways):

    1. Join Facebook podcast guest groups – share your bio and hosts will invite you
    2. Use PodMatch.com – It's like a dating service for podcasters (around $70/month, totally worth it if you're committed to booking at least one podcast per week)
    3. Cold pitch directly to podcasts (most time-consuming, some people pay VAs up to $300 per episode to do this, but I don't think you need to)

Pro tip: Don't just try to sell the whole time. Add value. Be personable. Share your story. That's what creates connection.

Bonus: Guest blogging works the same way – especially great if you're selling products or prefer writing to speaking.

Strategy #2: HARO (Help a Reporter Out)

Sign up at helpreporterout.com and you'll get daily (sometimes twice daily) lists of media outlets looking for experts to contribute pieces in your niche.

Whether you're in finance, business, health and wellness, women's health – whatever your field – contribute once or twice a month and you'll be leveraging massive audiences.

The power: Many of these publications syndicate their content to 20+ other outlets. Your article doesn't just get a little reach – it gets massive reach. You never know where it'll go, but showing up consistently is what matters.

Strategy #3: Host Workshops (Not Just Attend Them)

I'm going to be honest with you: I've been on quite a few of those big women's business summits and they haven't really been worth it. Often the summit host benefits more than the speakers – sometimes they even charge you to speak and then leverage YOUR audience more than they give back to you.

My recommendation: Team up with 2-3 other experts in complementary niches and HOST your own mini workshop.

Example: If you're a mineral balancing practitioner, partner with a mindset coach and a nutritionist. Your clients would benefit from all three, and you all get the benefit of leveraging each other's audiences.

    Workshop tips:

    • Make sure everyone has a reasonable email list and agrees to send out a certain number of promotional emails
    • Use LinkedIn Events – you can invite up to 1,000 people for free and it goes directly to their inbox
    • LinkedIn trick: Lots of people will click "going" but won't show up. Follow up in DMs with the registration link to increase your show-up ratio

    The Bottom Line:

If you're so focused on creating content that you're not leveraging other people's audiences, you're missing a huge opportunity.

Pull back and ask yourself: How can I invest in one experience per week that puts me in front of someone else's audience?

Pour into other people, and you will be poured into.

These strategies build authority, create trust transfer, and get you in front of qualified audiences who are already primed to hear your message. Stop talking to the same people on social media and start expanding your reach strategically.

  • If It Already Works, It's Already Obsolete – Future-Ready Your Business with Allister Frost

Friend, have you ever felt like the world of technology and business is moving at the speed of light – faster than you can keep up? It's not just a feeling. It's a fact. This is the new age we live in, where information flows at us like a fire hose.

Are you wondering if what you're doing now will be obsolete in six months? Today's guest is here to help you future-ready your mindset and your business so you don't get left behind.

Meet Allister Frost: Author, former Microsoft leader, and specialist in change and transformation. Allister spent 20 years in the corporate world – 10 years at Kimberly-Clark working on brands like Kleenex and Huggies, and 10 years at Microsoft where he had a front-row seat to how technology is reshaping everything. He recognized that while tech companies live at the bleeding edge of change, many industries and entrepreneurs aren't thinking the same way – and they're at risk of becoming irrelevant.

The wake-up call: At Microsoft, Allister learned a line from Bill Gates (borrowed from Marshall McLuhan) that changed everything: "If something works, it's already obsolete."

This is the opposite of the old corporate mantra "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." And it's the mindset shift every entrepreneur needs to survive and thrive in today's world.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

The lie of "future-proofing" – There's no such thing. That "future-proof" laptop from 10 years ago? Useless now. Instead of future-proofing, Allister teaches you to be future-ready – thinking ahead to inevitable changes and getting ahead of them so they fuel your growth instead of knocking you off course.

The Ready Already Growth Cycle – Allister's embarrassingly simple (but clever) five-step framework for staying relevant:

    1. Follow – Identify what you need to pay attention to (informed by your personal mission)
    2. React – Learn creatively about that thing, then decide if it's valid for your future
    3. Open – Challenge everything with childlike curiosity (Why do we do Monday meetings? Why paper invoices?)
    4. Surprise – Use bold imagination without self-censoring (computers will never beat human creativity)
    5. Tell – Share ideas with trusted people who respond with "Yes, and..." not "No, but..."

Your Personal Mission (North Star) – This sits at the center of everything. It's not your job title or company values – it's what you do in service of others. Allister's example: When given the "boring" job of managing email at Microsoft, he created the mission "I make the world better at email." That got him out of bed excited every Monday.

The downstream consequence question – If you do your job well, who benefits? Keep asking until you get to something meaningful. That sales spreadsheet you update? It might eventually lead to kids playing on a beach because their parents have financial stability. That's your real mission.

Why we resist change – It's biological. We fear loss of what we have. But Allister reveals the difference between dangerous and scary – most changes feel scary but aren't actually dangerous. We're literally the most change-capable species on Earth.

The "dog in a room full of squirrels" problem – Allister's boss would come to meetings with a list of shiny new things to chase. They wasted massive energy trying everything instead of doing one thing well. Be a steward of your energy. Focus on what matters to your North Star.

The three "superhuman powers" – Things humans will always do better than AI:

    • Naive curiosity (asking "why?" like a 5-year-old)
    • Bold imagination (non-obvious but valuable ideas)
    • Brilliant human-to-human communication (making ideas better together)

Key insight: Entrepreneurs often pine for security, consistency, smooth operations. They build systems hoping one day it'll "just work." But here's the truth – if you're standing still while everything outside your business is changing, you're actually moving backwards.

Your grandparents could learn one skill and use it their whole working life. That world is gone. Now, the minute you say "This is how I operate and I'm not changing," you become obsolete.

The dangerous myth: "We'll put off this project until next year when we have the new system/after the merger/when circumstances are better." There will never be perfect circumstances. That new system you're waiting for? It'll be obsolete before you implement it.

The reality: The future will be harder than today. Change will be quicker, more disruptive, more uncertain. If you don't have a North Star – a reason to keep learning and growing – you'll rest on your laurels and get left behind.

Allister's book: Ready Already – Intentionally short (around 100 pages) because your future is too important to waste time reading a complex model. Quick read with simple exercises so you can start creating your future immediately.

The invitation: Stop waiting for stability. Stop hoping it'll "just work already." Plants are either growing or dying. Your business is the same. Embrace that we're human beings designed for evolution, not stagnation.

Everything can be improved. Someone somewhere has figured out a smarter way. Take "if it already works, it's already obsolete" not as a threat to your experience, but as an invitation to keep improving.

  • Put Your Priorities In This Order And You Cannot Fail - For Online Service Entrepreneurs

Hey Freedom Seeker, you built your service business for freedom. But right now? You're exhausted, overwhelmed, and trapped. Your calendar is full but your soul feels empty.

I want to share something vulnerable with you today – the principle that completely transformed my life and business: God first, family second, career third.

I wasn't raised religiously. I didn't trust people who wore their faith on their sleeves. I was spiritual but skeptical of Christianity. Thirteen years ago, I heard this principle from my Mary Kay director and thought "that's nice" – but I had no idea how to actually live it.

The truth? I was living career first, family second, God third. Money was my idol. It determined whether I was happy or sad, successful or failing, free or trapped. I was enslaved to it.

When I started this podcast in 2021, I believed I needed money to have time freedom. That belief kept me stuck.

What shifted? I started attending church with a friend. I read the Bible – honestly, to prove it wrong – but found myself drawn to God instead. Over time, I realized God is the source. Not my hustle. Not my business. Not my bank account.

I've had six figures in savings and still worried constantly. I've had time off and been severely depressed. I've had secure income and been my own boss. But nothing – nothing – brought me freedom like surrendering to God as the source.

Recently it hit me: I was looking at upcoming expenses and I wasn't worried. Not because I had plenty in the bank, but because I was confident in God. That's when I knew I was finally living God first, family second, career third.

What does this look like? I make decisions by asking "Does God want me to do this?" I choose family over working late. I pray before I strategize. I build something sustainable, not something that requires me to sacrifice everything.

The result? My business has become more aligned, more purposeful, more sustainable. My family gets the present version of me. My peace doesn't depend on my sales or productivity anymore.

If you're recognizing that you've made time or money your idol – if you're placing your hope for freedom in something outside yourself – I want to invite you to get curious about God. Pick up a Bible. See what happens.

And if faith isn't your path, I still want you to ask: What have you made your god? Is it working?

This episode is different from my usual content. I wrestled with sharing this. But I've been guided to, and I can't hide what actually transformed my life. If you work with me, you already know I talk about God with my clients. I don't separate faith from business because they're not separate in my life.

True freedom might not be where you think it is, friend.

  • Are you using being busy as a shield?- For Overwhelmed Entrepreneurs

You're drowning. Too much to do, not enough time, can't keep up, exhausted, burnt out.

You know the solutions. Hire someone. Delegate that task. Invest in a system. Sometimes you even do these things.

    But more often? You don't.

Six months pass and you're having the same internal conversation. A year later, you're still in the same place. Still overwhelmed. Still stuck. Still doing everything yourself.

This episode isn't about time management. It's not about productivity hacks. It's about something much deeper: Why are you choosing to stay overwhelmed when help is available?

What overwhelm is really giving you:

A built-in excuse for why you're not further along ("I'd be more successful if I just had time"). You never have to face harder questions about whether your offer is good enough, whether you can actually sell, whether your idea is viable.

The identity of being irreplaceable, the hero, the martyr ("Nobody does it like me"). Being indispensable feels safer than building something that could run without you.

Protection from accountability. As long as you're drowning in tasks, you never have to find out if you're actually capable of building the business you say you want.

    The uncomfortable psychology:

You've tied your worth to your struggle. If it didn't hurt, if you didn't sacrifice – does it even count? You don't actually believe you deserve help. And accepting help would mean admitting you're not superhuman.

Real story: Someone had a complete roadmap after working with me – clarity on messaging, offers, marketing strategy. She paid for it. Then did nothing for a year. Posted constantly about being overwhelmed, about needing to build her funnel but not having time. When she finally invested in building it, it paid for itself in 90 days. She lost an entire year of revenue by staying stuck.

What was she really avoiding? The fear that if she built it and succeeded, she'd have to learn new skills and try new things she hadn't made a habit of - she would have to get uncomfortable.

    The real cost:

    • Your vision (buried in tasks instead of building strategically)
    • Your relationships (nothing left to give)
    • Your health (stress you can't sustain)
    • Your purpose (when did you last feel connected to why you started?)
    • The business you could have built and the life you could be living

The brutal truth: Your overwhelm is a choice. You're choosing to do everything yourself. You're choosing busy over strategic. You're choosing familiar overwhelm over uncertain growth.

The transformation: Stop tying your worth to your struggle. Your value isn't in how much you can handle – it's in your vision, your leadership, your ability to build something bigger than yourself.

The question that changes everything: What would you do if you weren't afraid?

You're not going to feel ready. You're waiting for permission that's never coming. Meanwhile, your life is passing and your dreams are on hold.

Your challenge: What's one thing you're going to stop doing yourself this week? What's one area where you're going to choose help over heroism?

The help you need is available right now. You just have to be brave enough to accept it.

  • What If Your Business Plan for 2026 Only Had One Goal?

It's Q4, and you know what that means: time to start planning for next year. And if you're like most entrepreneurs, you're already brainstorming what new products to launch, what additional services to offer, what more you can add to your business.

But here's what nobody tells you: that approach is exactly what's keeping you overwhelmed, scattered, and stuck.

In this episode, we flip traditional business planning on its head with a counterintuitive challenge: what if instead of adding more next year, you went deeper on what you're already doing?

Why "more" is sabotaging your growth:

The Complexity Tax: Every new product isn't just a revenue stream – it's new processes, new training, new marketing, new systems. One "simple" addition multiplies your workload exponentially.

The Confusion Factor: When you offer too many things, your message becomes muddled. Your ideal customer can't figure out what you actually do. And confused customers don't buy.

The Chaos Multiplier: Adding more products when your foundation is shaky doesn't solve your problems – it just gives you more plates to spin while standing on unstable ground.

The four-step framework for going deeper instead of wider:

    1. Go Deeper on the ONE Person You Serve – Get brutally specific about who you help. "Entrepreneurs" is too broad. "Service-based business owners at $250K who feel more overwhelmed than when they made $50K" is magnetic.
    2. Go Deeper on the ONE Problem You Solve – Become THE expert who solves one core problem exceptionally well. Think cardiologist, not general practitioner. Own one transformation completely.
    3. Iterate Your Delivery – Use what you've learned from working with customers to make your offer even better. Improve the experience, increase results, justify premium pricing.
    4. Refine Your Platform – Stop trying to be everywhere. Pick ONE platform where your ideal customer lives and master it. One platform done exceptionally well beats five done poorly.

The result: A laser-focused strategy that increases revenue, improves customer experience, and gives you back your mental peace.

The shift: From "What can I add?" to "How can I do this one thing even better?"

This isn't about doing less – it's about becoming undeniable at one thing instead of forgettable at many things. It's about building a business that's simpler to run, easier to scale, and actually delivers the freedom you started this journey seeking.

Your business plan for 2026 should make your life easier, not more chaotic. Depth beats breadth every single time.

Your Q4 planning challenge: Before you add anything new to your business plan, answer the four framework questions. You might discover the growth you're looking for doesn't require adding more – it requires going deeper.

If you need help identifying where to focus and how to optimize what's already working, book a free consultation with Biz in a Box Solutions. Let's build a plan that creates more revenue and more freedom – not more chaos.

  • From Corporate Banking to Natural Beauty: Finding Freedom in Authenticity

What does cutting your hair have to do with finding your life's purpose? For today's guest, it was everything.

Renae Williams spent years in the financial industry, straightening her hair since childhood because society told her that was the standard of beauty. But when she finally made the decision to cut it all off and return to her natural curls in 2012, she discovered something unexpected: the journey wasn't just about hair – it was about reclaiming her authentic self.

In this powerful episode, Renae shares how a simple haircut turned into a life-altering journey of self-discovery that ultimately led her to leave her corporate career and build Coco Bella Natural, a haircare company with a mission that goes far beyond products.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    • Why Renae felt unattractive and insecure immediately after her "empowering" haircut (and what changed)
    • How she accidentally became an influencer by starting a natural hair support group on Facebook
    • The health issues caused by chemical hair straighteners that forced her decision
    • Why building community came six years before building products – and why that matters
    • How self-esteem works like a muscle that gets stronger with practice
    • The difference between being private versus being secret as an entrepreneur
    • Managing hyper-growth during the pandemic while still working a 9-to-5 job
    • Why people don't buy products – they buy into the person behind them
    • How to balance giving freely while building a sustainable business

    Key insights:

    • Beauty isn't what you see – it's who you are on the inside
    • Your authentic self is your superpower, and no one else can be you
    • When people remember you, they remember how you made them feel, not how you looked
    • Freedom means being able to walk through the world without being bound by others' opinions

Renae's story is a testament to the power of authenticity, transparency, and showing up as your whole self – even on the bad hair days. Her journey from corporate employee to purpose-driven entrepreneur proves that sometimes the biggest business opportunities come from simply being real with people and building trust over time.

About Renae Williams: Renae Williams is the founder of Coco Bella Natural, a haircare company dedicated to helping women embrace their authentic selves. With a background in finance and management in the banking industry, Renae never planned to become an entrepreneur. But after cutting off her chemically straightened hair and returning to her natural curls in 2012, she discovered her true calling.

Renae created a natural hair support group on Facebook that grew into a thriving community of women seeking not just hair advice, but empowerment and self-acceptance. For six years, she freely shared knowledge, reviews, and encouragement before ever launching a product. When she finally introduced Coco Bella Natural's haircare line, her community was ready because she'd already built deep trust through transparency and authenticity.

More than just a haircare entrepreneur, Renae is a mentor to women navigating their own journeys of self-discovery. She teaches that self-esteem is like a muscle – it gets stronger with practice – and that true beauty comes from knowing who you are at your core, regardless of what the world tells you.

  • The Most Dangerous Thought You Can Have As An Entrepreneur

That old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," might work for your grandfather's lawnmower, but it's killing your business. While you're telling yourself your systems "work well enough," your competitors are innovating, your customers are comparing you to newer alternatives, and you're slowly becoming obsolete without even realizing it.

In this episode, we tackle one of the most dangerous mindsets in entrepreneurship: the belief that if something isn't completely broken, you shouldn't touch it. The problem? By the time something is obviously broken, you're already behind.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    • Why "good enough" is the enemy of growth (and profitability)
    • The real reason you resist updating systems – and it's not what you think
    • How a 1% improvement in your funnel could mean one more high-ticket client (do that math for your business)
    • Why your 5-year-old website is costing you customers you'll never even know about
    • The dangerous gap between "technically functioning" and "optimized for growth"
    • Why systems built for 3 employees are suffocating your team of 12
    • How younger competitors are studying your weaknesses while you're defending your "good enough"

The core truth: Businesses are like plants. If they're not growing, they're dying. There is no maintenance mode in entrepreneurship.

One actionable strategy: Mystery shop your own business. Have someone go through your entire customer journey and give you brutally honest feedback. What's confusing? What feels outdated? What messaging works and what doesn't? This single exercise could reveal revenue leaks you never knew existed.

The mindset shift you need: Stop asking "Is it broken?" and start asking "Could it be better?" Because while you're clinging to systems that technically work, someone else is building something that works better – and your customers are going to notice.

If you want outside eyes to find the gaps you can't see because you're too close to your business, book a free consultation with Biz in a Box Solutions. We'll help you turn "good enough" into exceptional.

  • The $10,000 Mistake Checklist: How to Prevent Business Blunders Before They Cost You

What if you could predict and prevent the costly mistakes that sink most businesses before they happen? In this episode, I sit down with William Holsten, a Business Mistake Prevention Specialist who's on a mission to help entrepreneurs avoid the expensive blunders that derail success.

Bill shares his own entrepreneurial journey – including the painful "uh-oh moment" when multiple customers called to complain about his invention after launch. He'd spent nearly $100,000 producing 100 units of a carnival game without proper testing, and the pieces were literally falling apart. The mistake nearly destroyed his business, but the lessons he learned transformed how he thinks about entrepreneurship.

Now retired from a established career at Bayer (where he led innovation for brands like Bayer Aspirin and Alka-Seltzer), Bill is conducting a entrepreneur study on business mistakes and has discovered something fascinating: 80% of entrepreneurs made one or more business-impacting mistakes in the past year, yet almost everyone rates their risk of making mistakes in the next 30 days as low.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    - How building funnels based on your own assumptions (not what customers actually think) is a costly mistake

    - The two specific tools that could have saved Bill $100,000 (and how you can use them)

    - Why "test and learn" isn't optional – it's essential for survival

    - How mapping your customer's actual experience reveals hidden problems

    - The power of asking "How might we..." instead of "What's wrong with this?"

    - Why entrepreneurs silo themselves and miss obvious solutions

    - The dangerous pattern of jumping into business without a solid plan

    - Creative problem-solving techniques borrowed from Picasso and Dr. Seuss

    Key frameworks revealed:

The "Look in the Mirror" exercise for identifying your mistake patterns

The $10,000 Mistake Checklist (free download on Bill's website)

How to think through problems using different lenses

When to ask for help versus trying to solve everything alone

Bill doesn't just tell you what to do – he helps you develop the creative problem-solving skills to handle whatever challenges come your way. Because fixing mistakes is expensive, but preventing them is priceless.

    About William (Bill) Holsten:

William Holsten is a Business Mistake Prevention Specialist, author of "Uh-Oh: Entrepreneurial Business Moments," and volunteer mentor with SCORE. With a 30-year career at Bayer leading brand management and innovation for major brands like Bayer Aspirin and Alka-Seltzer, Bill became an expert at generating new business ideas and solving complex problems using creative tools and workshops.

Bill and his wife Janet launched Whirlwinds LLC, where they developed and patented five carnival games – learning expensive lessons about entrepreneurship the hard way. Now he's dedicated to helping other entrepreneurs avoid the costly mistakes he made. Bill is a graduate of the Creative Education Foundation's Creative Problem Solving Institute and is currently conducting a comprehensive study on entrepreneurial mistakes to help business owners identify their risk factors and prevent blunders before they happen.
