Self-help is a massive industry, especially in our culture today. It seems that self-help books, motivational speakers, and life hacks are a dime a dozen, but the quest for a better life seems never-ending. In this information age, we still have not found the answer to a truly fulfilling life. Perhaps it’s because we are looking for the right answer in the wrong place.
So often, we default to a “think” and “do” way of life and Christianity. However, throughout Scripture, God emphasizes the heart as the most essential component of our relationship with Him and others. From the heart come the springs of life (Proverbs 4:23). Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). Love the Lord your God with all your heart (Deuteronomy 6:5). It’s clear that the heart is the foundation of our lives, and yet the lie we believe is that we have the power to change it. So, what hope do we have? As with most of God’s upside-down ways, the path to victory is by surrender.
