Freedom is in Moving Forward - Stop Holding Yourself Back

You will gain more freedom in your life if you make a continual effort to move forward, go after your goals & take action. Holding yourself for others doesn't do you any favors. I'm giving tips on how to move forward in your life!

I’ve been dealing with a lot of very uncomfortable procrastination lately. It’s uncomfortable because I know what needs to be done, I really want to do it, but I don’t. And I know to some, it doesn’t make sense. My therapist was under the impression that I just don’t want to do those things, when really it’s because I don’t want to let people down.

Before I get into what that means, I want to note how important it is to take the time to figure out what is stopping you. More on that later. But for me, I had spent a lot of time trying to figure out why I was being this way. Why was I feeling crippled in fear & stagnation on the couch, watching Gilmore Girls & not upstairs in my office working on my dreams. And it finally came to me that I don’t want to have to let down the people. I didn’t want my sudden schedule of busyness to affect my family & friends. This all boiled down to people pleasing. 

With the changes I wanted to make in my life, I finally realized it was going to affect others because I wouldn’t be there to swoop in & save the day. I wouldn’t just be free to do whatever needed to be done. And it made me realize how much I just make myself available for everyone. Which led me to realize this is the reason I don’t go after my goals & dreams because I’m so worried about being there to help others with their goals & dreams. I wasn’t prioritizing myself.

And you can’t move forward in life if you don’t take the time to take action. You can hope & desire for things to change & achieve goals & grow, but without action, none of that will happen.

You can’t move forward in life if you are always on the back burner. 

You can’t move forward in life if you do something to overcome your struggles.

You can’t move forward in life if you don’t realize you are holding yourself back.

Here are some tips on how to move forward in life:

  1. Understand why you’re stuck. (what’s getting in the way?)
  2. Stop allowing others to influence your actions. (negative influences)
  3. Seeking validation from others will foster more self-doubt.
  4. Believe that mistakes & failures are the best learning opportunities. Not everything will be easy.
  5. Don’t allow your past to define you. (episode 348 for more on this topic)
  6. Don’t give up so soon into the process. Make changes but don’t give up.
  7. Take small steps until you gain momentum.
