Welcome to the Freedom Kids Podcast, brought to you by the children and young people who play at Felix Road Adventure Playground in Easton, Bristol.
This episode explores how cooking is a life skill that helps people care for themselves and others, especially as they grow older.
The children share their favourite foods, from sauerkraut and curry to chips and Romanian dishes like sarmale and mici. They explain how they learn about food through school, family members, cooking clubs and online platforms like YouTube and TikTok. Some have even cooked in local community kitchens, learning dishes from other cultures like Greek salad and pizza.
They reflect on the many ways to gain cooking skills, whether through watching relatives, attending cooking sessions at Felix Road, or experimenting at home. They describe making toasties on a bonfire, using microwaves and slow cookers, and even learning safety tips like how to use a hob without getting hurt.
The children share thoughtful questions about food and the world: How do tiny seeds grow into big plants? Why are some people allergic to certain foods? How does climate change affect what we eat? They also express a desire to learn more about cooking healthy meals, understanding spices, and the history and future of food.
