Freelance Fitness is your weekly 10-minute movement break designed for creative freelancers, voice actors, designers, writers, editors, and anyone who spends their days creating, producing, and problem-solving. Hosted by freelance voiceover artist and former fitness instructor Alison Pentecost, each episode blends mindset coaching, creative productivity, and simple exercises you can do anywhere.
For the inaugural episode, I will guide you through a short run while I tell you how I stumbled into a freelance voiceover career (please don't stumble while running!)
I thought I'd talk about how little I knew about the voiceover business before I got into it and how much more complex and challenging it turned out to be. Like when I was training to run a marathon. I thought I'd done enough research before jumping in, but boy, once I was in the middle of it, I discovered challenges I hadn't anticipated and wondered whether I was in over my head!
A few of the things I've learned (so far) are:
- Accepting that I was going to feel uncomfortable and awkward at the beginning.
- Understanding this is a journey, not a destination.
- Forgiveness and empathy for myself for not getting it perfect right away.
- And when in doubt, remember why I left my day job!
It still gets scary sometimes, being a freelancer, with no one else to make the decisions but you. Levelling up always comes with a certain amount of discomfort. But there's also a glorious amount of freedom and possibility. I hope you feel that way too.
