NIV: While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.

When the Pharisees saw him keeping this kind of company, they had a fit, and lit into Jesus' followers. "What kind of example is this from your Teacher, acting cozy with crooks and riffraff?"

St. John 12:6

NLT: Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief who was in charge of the disciples' funds, and he often took some for his own use.

GNT: He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. He carried the money bag and would help himself from it.

St. Matthew 7:9

NLT: You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead?

NIV: "Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?

St. Matthew 7:10

NLT: Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not!

Genesis 41:51 Joseph named his older son Manasseh, for he said, "God has made me forget all my troubles and the family of my father."
