Diabetes is life long, and there is an assumption that people who have lived with it for many years are used to it and that it doesn’t phase them. But the reality is, that is not the case at all.

In this episode, Charlie sits down with her dad, Papa Granby, aka John, to talk to him about his 41 year journey with diabetes. They discuss his feelings/processes, how he navigated his teenage years living with a chronic illness that at the time, was managed very differently to how we manage diabetes these days; glass syringes and no such thing as carb counting?!

Navigating life with diabetes is hard enough a lot of the time, but what about during a pandemic as well? Life was well and truly turned upside down for everyone last year, throwing everything we’ve ever known, out the window. We are constantly told by our HCPs that diabetes thrives with a routine, but with a year coming in and out of lockdowns, limited exercise, more time at home and the stress of everything, how does one even begin to manage a truly relentless chronic illness?

Nowadays, advocacy for chronic illnesses and mental health is everywhere on social media, and it is great to see! It has brought communities together, sharing experiences and creating safe spaces for those struggling. It has also helped massively with paving the way for better care and conversations around disabilities and chronic health conditions.

In this episode, we are joined by Andrew @speckybeardo, who lives with Type 3c diabetes and Von Hippel-Lindau Syndome. He shares his experiences of having to self advocate within a healthcare setting, and the importance of it, due to HCPs not being aware of his situation, and the dangers that come with it.

In the UK, we are very lucky to have access to insulin without really any restrictions whatsoever. However in other countries, particularly the United States, insulin is barely affordable and it is costing not only thousands of dollars, but millions of lives every year due to its inaccessibility. It's been 100 years since insulin was first discovered as a treatment for diabetes, but how far have we really come?

In this episode, we are joined by Lexie @thedivabetic, and talk to her about the last 100 years of insulin, and her experiences growing up with diabetes in America and navigating the US healthcare system.

Mental health, while widely acknowledged and talked about, is still very much a taboo subject. Many people feel they can’t talk about their own struggles with their mental health journey, especially related to diabetes. There is very much a ‘make do and carry on’ attitude, which can have a lasting, damaging effect on people’s mental health and their diabetes management.

In this episode, join Charlie and Vanessa as they sit down and discuss mental health issues such as diabetes distress, depression and anxiety. Charlie shares some of her own experiences of living with mental illness and type one diabetes, as well as common issues people living with diabetes face, and where support can be found.
