On this episode of the Freshwater Bite Podcast, Lee is joined by his bud from Minnesota, Forrest Leitch. Forrest had just returned from a very memorable Lake trout trip up in Canada. The boys have a discussion on how Forrest and the Hang Loose Outdoor crew, break down the deep Lake trout lakes of the north to help you be more successful. Hooking into Lake trout through the ice could be one of the most memorable experiences you will have on the ice and one hell of a ride. Forrest shares their gear set up, lures used and tips to help you try and land one of these powerful fish yourself.

Other topics discussed are how difficult and a challenging it is to chase after the elusive Muskie and the mindset you have to have going into it. Forrest also sheds a little light on the controversy and political debate over Mille Lacs Lake fish regulations.

My guest today demonstrates the power of blogging and just how many people she can reach.  Ashley Rae, is the creator of shelovestofish.com, a blog the documents her adventures on the water doing what she loves to do most, fish.  Ashely started the blog back in 2009 and has grown it steadily to help catapult her career and become a well known name in the fishing industry.  She is a freelance writer, brand ambassador and has been published in Field and Stream Magazine.

Today on the podcast we discuss when and how she grew up fishing, starting the blog, how her career took off, tournament wins and more.  Ashley also discusses her future ambitions and how she plans to get more women involved in the sport of fishing.

Most folks who are born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada I would think might not have many freshwater fishing opportunities.  When I think of Vegas, I think of it being in the middle of nowhere surrounded by desert.  If you have ever flown into Las Vegas however you do see some man made reservoirs like Lake Mead.  It just shows you the naivety of a freshwater spoiled angler like myself not knowing much about fishing opportunities in southwest United States.  

My guest today, Theo Toliver,  grew up in Las Vegas and educated myself on the local body of water he grew up on and learned how to fish.  We talk about how that passion for fishing as a child grew into the obsessive walleye angler he has become today living in North Dakota.  Theo is part of the Fish Addictions staff and put down his roots in North Dakota with a huge deciding factor based on the presence of walleye and other amazing fishing locations.   

This once Las Vegas native is now enjoying walking on hard water and creating YouTube videos and on a popular TV show, Fish Addictions TV, educating anglers from all over.  Theo shares with us some tips for being on the ice this season as well as some open water tactics to catch fish in prairie country.  

I truly enjoyed our conversation and love how fishing and experiences in the outdoor can have such an impact on ones path in life.

Thanksgiving is always a great time of year to get into the holiday spirit.  Around this time of year while everyone is out shopping and decorating some of us are fortunate enough to have fishable ice to walk on.  We have a few days off of work and we just can't wait to pull our first fish through an ice hole.  If I don't have safe ice yet to walk on around Thanksgiving I'll at least pull out the rods, reels, shanty, flasher and auger to get them all tuned up and ready.  While this can be as exciting as Christmas morning for some of us, we should probably pay more attention to our safety gear as we venture out on to first ice.  I myself am guilty of not paying attention to the fine details of my safety gear sometimes.  Do I have a plan and the proper gear to get myself out of a ice hole if I fall in?  Do you?

I am joined today by Trent Eineichner of the Bemidji Fire Department to talk about ice safety and what to keep in mind as we head out onto first ice.  Trent is the Fire Captain in Bemidji and shares a ton of value to keep us safe as we enter our 2018-2019 ice season.  Also a very accomplished angler with multiple appearances on The Next Bite TV show, Trent walks us through must have gear, tips and techniques to help us stay safe.

This is an episode I hope many of you take the time to listen to.  You may think that you have been ice fishing all of your life and have everything you need but what's a few minutes out of your drive to work to listen to some techniques and gear that might save your life.  In the end, its always a great reminder to not think about what lures too rig up first but instead where is my safety rope, spud bar and life jacket to put in the shanty.  As always thank you for listening and let's stay safe.
