What does it mean to learn outside and what does nature have left to teach us?
It’s estimated that there are over 1,000 nature or outdoor-based schools in the United States, according to the Outdoor Discovery Schools directory. This number is growing rapidly, as more and more parents and educators are recognizing the benefits of nature-based education.
We met with Angela-Cannon Crothers, a Programs Coordinator who leads outdoor classes for the Cumming Nature Center to talk about the types of skills children learn in these programs, how things have changed since the pandemic, and the barriers preventing schools like this from gaining greater popularity. You can find a copy of Angela's book, Changing Seasons in the Finger Lakes, here.
