    a conversation with La Doña,  the Mission’s Cecilia Peña-Govea, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, featuring her wide-ranging music, with deep roots in Latin folk traditions from corridos, rancheras, mariachi and rumba to modern reggaeton, cumbia, and hip hop … digging into reflections on her feminist path in the industry, sustaining radical joy, and her deep nurturance of and with community…  in advance of her hometown return at the Fillmore on Thursday 11/9.

    But to start out, our ‘first Friday’s poet',  Stephen Meadows, a Californian poet with roots deep in both the Ohlone and the pioneer soil of his home state. His poems are elemental visions that capture the essential truths of his life and the beauty of the natural world around us, words for our ever-present history, for legacy and for resilience

   in conversation with Sona Jobarteh,  internationally renowned kora virtuoso, singer  and educational reformer,  and the first woman to be a lineage holder from any of the West African jeli (griot) dynasties.  As founder of The Gambia Academy, she is initiating a model for educational reform throughout Africa. As an artist upholding an evolving tradition over 1200 years old, released 'BADINYA KUMOO', a suite of her own compositions -7 years in the making-and pushing it forward. We'll dig deep into all that and feature her music, and others from West Africa and the diaspora(s), in advance of her just sold-out San Francisco appearance

Mimi has an MA in Literature from Mills College, and is currently a doctoral candidate in the Creative/Critical PhD in Literature at UC Santa Cruz, with a visual and curatorial practice on the side, the fifth poetic element . Her debut collection of poems, the monumental misrememberings, was published by Co-Conspirator Press in 2020. Her second book, the delicacy of embracing spirals, is just out on City Lights Books.
