Friends From Film School Podcast - EP 64: Akira - The Cult Anime Classic

This week we continue the journey into the weird and wonderful world of Anime. Ellis has been taken on the duty to teach Luke & Brad about the intricacies of Japanese animation and ultimately try to win them over as "Anime fans." This week, we take a look at where America's modern anime obsession started,  the 1988 cult classic, Akira. This Katsuhiro Otomo directed film tells the complex story of Kaneda, a bike gang leader, and his psychic, superpowered friend Tetsuo who has fallen victim to a secret government project. The pair faces-off against anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader until Tetsuo's supernatural powers suddenly manifest causing a final battle between him and Kaneda in the Tokyo Olympiad. In this episode, we enlist our good friend, actor Ryan Littmann, to share his thoughts on anime and if this 33 year old movie still holds up. Time to take to the streets of Neo-Tokyo and figure out if Akira is worth the acclaim.

Friends From Film School Podcast EP 61:

Bigger, Badder, and in 4:3 -  Zack Snyder's Justice League

We're back after another long hiatus, aka Ellis' COVID quarantine to discuss the biggest film event of 2021 so far. That's right, this week Brad, Luke, and Ellis dive right into Zack Snyder's moody, dark, slow-motion & square ratio'd, 4 hour director's cut of 2017's Justice League. Not familiar with Justice League, and the Snyder Cut story? After a family tragedy, Zack Snyder stepped away from the project in 2017 and it was retooled for a shorter, quippier version helmed by Avengers director Joss Whedon. After the original films box-office failure, rumors of a much longer and more serious Zack Snyder cut of the movie spread and through social media hashtags and public outcry from fans and the movie's cast, HBO Max finally re-teamed with Snyder to release Justice League in its original intended glory.   The friends are tasked with answering this question: Does Snyder's unsupervised edit reign supereme or did the suits at Warner Bros make the right call in bringing in Whedon to course correct the project? Join us to find out our thoughts on this HBO Max Superhero epic.

Friends From Film School Podcast EP 60:

When Does Style Become Parody?

This week the FFFS gang attempts to answer the age old question, "when does an actor, director, or series style eventually become a parody of itself?" Ellis shares his theory about how it's connected to meme culture. Luke allowed the group to discuss the phenomena with  examples such as William Shatner, Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the show Supernatural. And Brad illuminates the rest of the crew on the insanity of Nicolas Cage and how he was a parody of himself even before he was famous enough to be parodied. So tune in and get ready for a riveting discussion on style, substance, parody, and pastiche. Plus enjoy our thoughts on the series finale and behind the scenes breakdown of WandaVision!
