  • Season 2 Episode 5. Jason Snook from AWARE Recovery Care
Our guest today is Jason Snook, MSW, LICSW. He shares his very personal story of recovery and relapse as a professional in the field.

Jersey Ed’s Podcast Pick of the Week:
SoberPod hosted by Carl, Ellen, and Steve. A weekly podcast on recovery from three different perspectives. Carl is an agnostic, Ellen is a believer, and Steve is an atheist.

Jason Snook is our guest, Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker from New Hampshire and Clinical Outreach Manager for Aware Recovery Care. They deliver year-long in-home addiction treatment services. Aware Recovery Care works with people referred through probation, parole, diversion programs, or with physical limitations, mental health concerns, etc.

The longer someone is in treatment, the better their chances for success in recovery.

Jason says his group will collaborate with anyone in the field, including interventionists, detox and inpatient level of care. They provide the full continuum of care, AND an individual can be simultaneously enrolled in their care program as well as PHP, IOP, outpatient therapy, etc.

His advice? We aren’t all sick on the same day. We aren’t expecting the twists that are presented in our lives. Stick with it, learn your triggers. The slip can be a setback, but it made me stronger in my recovery. It brought me closer to my community, my higher power, the purpose and the value of my life. Relapse leads us back to treatment to figure out what we missed!

  • Season 2. Ep. 4. - Virtual AA Meeting

This week, hosts Jersey Ed & Mike the Podfather invite you to join them for a virtual AA meeting! The guys frequently reference the Alcoholics Anonymous & Narcotics Anonymous programs in the show and how they both personally benefit from participation. For this show, we thought it would be valuable to host a virtual meeting to share what it’s all about.

Reminder! The Friends in Recovery Community of Support currently hosts monthly meetings in Palm Springs, Florida and Voorhees, New Jersey. New events are coming soon in Newtown, Connecticut, Lowell, Massachusetts, and Richmond, Virginia. Follow us on Facebook for updates!

Jersey Ed’s Podcast Pick of the Week: Coaching through Chaos

Host Dr. Colleen Mullen offers inspiring and motivating stories about relationships, finance, stress, conflict resolution, healthy living, addiction recovery, health and fitness, money management, success coaching and veteran projects.

    https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/coaching-through-chaos-podcast

Let’s start with the AA Preamble:

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are selfs supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

AA’s 12-Step approach follows a set of guidelines designed as “steps” toward recovery, and members can revisit these steps at any time. The 12 Steps are:9

    1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.

    2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
    3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
    4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
    5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
    6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
    7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
    8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
    9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
    10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
    11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
    12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Your Higher Power does not need to be “God,” as defined by someone else. It works if you work it. The program is not based on intelligence, it’s based on heart. The benefits you reap will come from the effort you put in. In a meeting, it’s okay to be yourself. It’s okay not to be okay - and you don’t need to feel guilt or shame because of it.

    Serenity Prayer:

    God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

  • Season 2. Ep. 3. - Adrienne Loker, LCSW Discussing EMDR
Hosts Jersey Ed & Mike the Podfather welcome Adrienne Loker to the Friends in Recovery Podcast. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a passion for helping individuals in recovery “become unstuck.” In her practice, Adrienne utilizes intensive EMDR techniques to facilitate healing and prevent past trauma from contributing to present-day relapse.

For those not familiar with this therapeutic technique, Adrienne provides a review of EMDR (Eye Movement De-Sensitization and Reprocessing) and how touchstone memories can sometimes serve as the root of past trauma that continues to haunt us in present day. For Adrienne and her clients, EMDR serves a conscious effort to “re-program” those painful memories and enable us to become UNSTUCK.

Adrienne’s practice is called Seeking Depth to Recovery and is located in the Richmond, Virginia area. Her services include intensive individual therapy, group therapy, and psychodrama retreats for both clients and clinicians.

  • Season 2. Ep. 2. - Discussing FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act)

The guys are getting comfortable in the new studio! This week, the Podfather Mike Miles & Jersey Ed (Ed Chionchio Sr) want to discuss the in’s and out’s of FMLA. What is it? Who can use it? How does it all work?

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) offers up to 12 weeks of unpaid job protection for certain types of employees. FMLA covers time off for the birth of a child, the illness or death of a family member, and the illness of an employee. Taking time off to receive treatment for mental health or substance use is covered by FMLA.

Your employer wants you to be healthy! It costs much more to hire and train a new employee than it does to invest in the health and wellness of your experienced staff members. The alternative to taking the time to get treatment NOW is losing that job and employer-sponsored health plan. Short-Term Disability benefits can help to cover your salary while you are in treatment.

Genesis House is one program that does a great job guiding clients through this process. They handle the paperwork and communicate with Human Resources as needed and requested by the client.

The Podfather shares some details about how his friends, colleagues, and loved ones came together to support his treatment and early recovery.

FMLA, Short-term Disability, and Employee Assistance Programs are incredibly valuable resources, but many employees just aren’t sure how to get started. If you are struggling and need help, go to the professionals. Give Jersey Ed or the Podfather a call to ask questions.
