Ayan Biswas is an independent documentary photographer residing in Ladakh. His practice visually represents indigenous people's coexistence with their surrounding spaces, highlighting the factors that bind them as a community. He documents their ways of living and adopts an ethnographic approach to understand their lives.
His aim is to practice anthropology that does not separate humans from nonhumans radically. Ayan showcases vignettes of their lives, often using ordinary objects and moments that define their identity. He explores various historical printing processes to express his belief that each medium has its own language. He teaches locals and collaborates with them to document their culture and identity through historical printing processes.
In 2016, he initiated ArtInHills, which enables locals from remote villages to share their way of life and culture through different mediums. One such medium involves painting photographs of their lives on glass bottles, which are then upcycled into lamps. This unique approach allows their stories to travel in the form of handmade light lamps.
