Froch On Fighting

In part two of the Eddie Hearn interview, Carl remembers why he signed with the unproven young promoter, when things nearly went pear-shaped in the excitement during the Lucian Bute fight, and how the Groves fight came about.

Eddie Hearn joins the podcast to talk about his plan for restarting boxing, what it could mean for the biggest stars in the sport including Anthony Joshua, and his long fight day phone calls with the Cobra!

With boxing’s potential return in July, Carl explains why he’s not a fan of fights taking place in empty venues and suggests the sport should consider waiting until it’s 100% safe to do so. And with Mike Tyson threatening to come out of retirement aged 53, Carl tells us why it’s a bad idea.

Carl's trainer Rob McCracken joins the podcast to explain how he built Carl from a nervous amateur into a world champion, the times in their career together when it didn't go right and his work now with heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

Carl sets the record straight regarding Anthony Joshua after a dodgy pound-for-pound list was released, and explains how nerves and fear can work for or against a fighter in their boxing career.

Carl remembers his time working the doors in his family's pub as a teenager, reveals how close he was to fighting Julio Cesar Chavez jr in Las Vegas to end his career, and says which super middleweights from history he'd love to fight - including Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran and Nigel Benn.

Carl replies to Joe Calzaghe after last week's lively episode, and then lifts the lid on how fighters get paid, from their first fights as a pro up to headlining pay-per-view bills.

From final bell to returning home, Carl explains what a boxer has to go through both practically and emotionally in the aftermath of a big fight. He talks about having to juggle doctors, drug testers and media with wanting to spend time with friends and family. And what chance of seeing the fight that never was? Carl has a message for Joe Calzaghe!

Flicking through his old diaries again, Carl recounts his pre-fight routine from weigh-in to first bell. Referencing many of his world title fights, he talks about the psychological importance of the weigh-in, how he stayed focussed in those hours before the fight, what he did to deal with the nerves and why nailing the ring walk right was so important.

Carl breaks down his training routines throughout his career, using the notebooks in which he recorded every run, press up and sparring session. He breaks down some brutal sparring sessions with Tony Bellew, and how he knew he was in the best shape of his life leading up to the second Groves fight.
