In this deeply personal episode of Grief to Purpose: The Magic of Milly, Emma shares what happened in the days and weeks after losing Milly, and the reality of learning how to live when everything has changed.
Emma reflects on leaving the hospital, returning home without her daughter, arranging Milly’s funeral, and trying to navigate a world that carried on when hers had been completely altered. She speaks openly about continuing to care for Milly after she had died, the difficulty of saying goodbye, and the process of beginning to understand that grief is not something you simply move on from, but something you learn to carry.
Through the pain, Emma also reflects on the extraordinary privilege of being Milly’s mum and the perspective that has stayed with her: “We were chosen to look after her and give her the best possible two years that she could.”
The episode also explores how fundraising became a way of keeping Milly present and turning grief into purpose. Most recently, that journey led Emma and the team to take on the National Three Peaks Challenge, pushing through exhaustion, difficult weather and some incredibly tough moments to raise thousands of pounds in Milly’s memory.
The title One Foot in Front of the Other carries a double meaning. It describes the physical determination needed to keep climbing when the challenge became difficult, but also something much bigger: the way Emma has learned to live alongside grief, continuing forward one step and one day at a time while carrying Milly with her.
Raw, honest, but also filled with love and hope, this episode explores bereavement, resilience, fundraising and finding purpose after unimaginable loss.
More than a story about moving forward, it is a story about discovering that moving forward does not mean leaving someone behind.
The Magic of Milly is based on lived experience and created to help bereaved families feel less alone, while offering greater understanding of the realities of child loss, grief and life after bereavement.
