Today we got the opportunity to have a conversation with Compton's very own Darrell Williams and boy did he bring it!
Using his extensive experience as a master certified life coach and a member of the Federal Coaching Network we got him to share gems such as:
Getting shot at story (When I run you run)
Avoiding peer pressure. Mom always reminded him to live with purpose.
Attending Compton High and having lunchtime jams that helped with having peace in the community. (This is when Darrell’s rap career started lol)
One of the first steps you can take to change your life is to never stop dreaming. Using the naysayers as energy by proving them wrong.
Keep the grind and keep the faith. There will be setbacks but someone is counting on you. Failure is a part of success. It teaches you what not to do. You're not starting fresh you’re starting with experience.
Military weapons and street guns are two different things. Being from Compton they expected him to know how to shoot.
Don’t think you need to go at it alone. Learn from the experts.
While in the army his buddies were still on the block. His buddies said they would sign up but never did.
Going back to the hood in a rental car was a bit risky. He always went back home to check-in and show love. Part of his success came from the people he grew up with.
How he went from Compton to the White House. Being the best possible with the small things allowed him to get a special assignment.
Learning to adapt to an environment so the people who come after him already have somewhat of a blueprint.
Find a mentor. Someone who has walked the path before. When they see you are really serious they will help you. Instead of hating on a person find out how they got there.
How you handle one thing is how you handle everything.
What he learned in the military he tries to bring back to his community through his company Alliance Seminars. Started as the Alliance Youth Network a coalition of specialized speakers/coaches in different areas.
He made a promise to a teacher who said “when you make it come back and talk to these kids”.
Start where you are. His business evolved over time by just starting.
Having a battle buddy or accountability partner
How he met his wife when he least expected it and without looking for her. “Don’t look for the right person, become the right person.”
Reverse engineering your ideal life and doing the little things day-by-day.
Why he and his wife dress alike occasionally.
Leadership is a process of influencing others as you provide motivation, direction, and purpose to achieve a common goal. Good leaders take the time to really empower others. Leadership examples are all around us.
