This week Heaven talks about the 1999 Alexander Payne film, ELECTION. Specifically, Heaven will be discussing the cultural view of how the public viewed powerful men fall from grace due to taking advantage of power dynamics and assaulting young women as a sense of entitlement and inability to take account for their own bad actions, such as the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal that happened a year prior to this film's release. Heaven will also discuss male entitlement and another film that came out the same year that dealt with similar themes, AMERICAN BEAUTY, and how victims of these types of abuse can feel as if they have agency in the situation if they went into these relationships willingly despite power dynamics and age.

This week's discussion centers around reality TV shows based on marriages--specifically arranged marriages that are described as "social experiments". Heaven discusses two specific shows, "Love Is Blind" and "Married At First Sight" and how these shows try to eliminate physical appearance from the equation while showing what good marriages look like, in particular what kind of marriages are considered good, who is able to fall in love, and if these experts have these people's best interests at heart.

I revisit the DICK PICS segment to review another male-centric film, JACKASS THE MOVIE. I discuss it's relationship with MTV and how it combatted with low pay, low support from the channel and it's controversy surrounding Senator Joe Lieberman along with the Dude's Rock movement--male bonding, male camaraderie, self-destructive behavior and how Federico Fellini, Minutemen, Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye's friendship tie in with the spirit of JACKASS. I also review this film and some of the standout sequences.

In the first half of this week's episode, Heaven discusses the idea of taking problematic elements/scenes out of film, and whether or not it's beneficial to adhere to such practices to make some films easier to swallow.

In the second half of the episode, Heaven talks about the Bechdel Test--what it is, its origins, how it tends to get used as a gauge of whether or not a film is considered "good" rather than it's intended use which is if whether or not there is female representation in the film.

This week Heaven revisits the topic of Butt Rock to the Butt Rock adjacent genre, Taint Rock. Heaven investigates the bands in 90's rock who were Sad Boys and explored their emotions in masculine ways via common tropes such as using a woman in peril, admiring a messed up woman from afar or songs of self-loathing and self-deprecation, and pitying the romantic partners who stuck with them as a way to divorce themselves from hard topics they are otherwise unable to talk about. She also follows the thread of what may have been the start of Taint Rock--The Smashing Pumpkins.
