A storm alert from the newsroom of the Northwest Florida Daily News and its sister papers.I'm Nick Tomecek.The tropical disturbance headed to the Gulf of Mexico  has strengthened and is now Tropical Storm Gordon

The system has almost no chance of development through the next 48 hours and just a 10 percent chance of development over the next five days. Regardless of development, forecasters say the system is expected to bring rain to the area next week.

The next named storm in the Atlantic basin will be called Florence.

18-year-old Sedric Deon Brooks Jr. was sentenced by Circuit Judge W. Joel Boles to 20 years in state prison to be followed by four years of probation. Brooks pled no contest in June to three counts of robbery with a deadly weapon and one count of principal to robbery without a weapon.
