Welcome back to From the Pasture with Hired Hand! We’re excited to bring you today’s episode all about the upcoming GNTLA Great Northern Longhorn Classic and Cheesehead Futurity, held in Gresham, Wisconsin. Now in its 9th year, this event has grown from a small, local gathering into a highly anticipated weekend for Longhorn breeders across the country.

We’re joined by sale hosts Dan Huntington and Ali Mast, who share the story behind the event’s growth and what’s in store this year. The weekend kicks off on Friday, July 25th with the Cheesehead Futurity, followed by a classic Midwest Fish Fry that evening. Then on Saturday, July 26th, the fun continues with the Little Cheesers Haltered Show at 9am, Brunch and Awards at 10, and the Great Northern Longhorn Classic at noon.

And of course, it wouldn’t be Wisconsin without cheese curds! There will be plenty of varieties to sample all weekend long, ending with everyone’s favorite — deep fried cheese curds served on Saturday.

Today, on From the Pasture with Hired Hand, we visit with Lindsey Monk located at her ranch, Big Sky Livestock in south central Montana.  Lindsey, and her husband Ben are fourth generation to live and work their ranch. They've had various breeds of cattle throughout the years and maintained a love for ranch horses.  Lindsey talks with Molly about the importance and value of a good neighbor, how they deal with their extreme weather and their love for Snickers candy bars. We welcome Gary Hershberger on today's episode of From the Pasture with Hired Hand. Gary is the owner of Hershberger Cattle Company that is located in Holmes Country, Ohio.  In September 2001, Gary started a hobby of raising Longhorns. In 2015 he improved his herd by purchasing higher quality cows and Gary started an A.I. breeding & an embryo program. In September of 2020, he saw the fruits of his longhorn labor and Gary sold a two year old heifer for $20,000 and ended up with a few futurity wins. In addition to raising Longhorns, Gary raises Labrador Retrievers and builds beautiful custom furniture and cabinetry.
