It is written to a church that is greatly suffering because of their faith in Christ and disturbed by a teaching that Christ had already returned. The first epistle to the Thessalonians is one of the earliest of the New Testament letters. The Apostle Paul loved these people dearly. They embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ wholeheartedly but faced stiff persecution. Also, they were expecting Jesus to return in the very near future but some of them had passed away. They wondered if the deceased would miss out on the Lord's return. Shema (שָׁמַע) is a Hebrew word you should know. Usually translated "hear," it means more than receiving sound waves through the ears. It includes a response. Believers are called not only to listen but to respond and obey God's voice. In Deuteronomy 6, we are called to love God perfectly, with our entire person, everything within and everything we have. This is an unsurmountable task. Thankfully, Jesus Christ perfectly heard and responded to everything expected of us.

The Epistle to the Colossians is a response to false teaching that was gaining ground among believers in Colossae. Apparently they were taught that they must abstain from certain foods and observe certain festivals. It also seems that there was a fear of spiritual powers. Hallelujah (הַלְלוּ־יָהּ) is a Hebrew word you should know. Translated, "Praise the LORD," it's in countless hymns and worship songs. Even secular music has incorporated the word in Leonard Cohen's 1984 song. In Revelation chapter 19, "hallelujah" is used to rejoice in the overthrow of evil. In Christ, all believers will one day shout "hallelujah" at the demise of evil.

The Epistle to the Philippians is about joy and rejoicing always. Paul was imprisoned while writing this letter and the recipients at Philippi were experiencing persecution for their faith. Yet, Paul rejoices and tells them to rejoice also, not because the times were great but because of who Jesus is and what he has done on our behalf. The book of Philippians at a glance.

Sheol (שְׁאוֹל) is a Hebrew word you should know. Sometimes translated "the grave," other Bibles do not even translate the word at all. The word highlights how the Bible talks about two distinct kinds of death. First, there is the clinical state of physical death where the heart stops. Second, and more frequently, the Bible says death is the consequence for sin. Jesus Christ is salvation from this death.
