Sheriff Flynn and Doctor Cooper travel late at night to the mayor’s farm, only to find more tragedy. Soon, their very lives are at risk as the thing responsible, seemingly indestructible, bears down on them in fury.

The residents of Blightwood respond to the latest tragedy. Sheriff Flynn is confident that the menace is no wolf or bear but something beyond comprehension.  Dr. Cooper still retains some doubt, but even he remains at a loss regarding the course of action required.

 Isolated with no means to communicate with the outside world, Horace and the other survivors must attempt a desperate trek through miles of wilderness before nightfall. 

Fed up with Sheriff Flynn’s lack of progress regarding the gruesome deaths, the town’s Mayor, Moses Owmby, takes matters into his own hands, much to Sheriff Flynn’s dismay. Meanwhile, Hattie Ogle has a most unusual encounter with a customer in her shop. Doctor Cooper attempts to inspect a patient and discovers instead a mystery.

Sheriff Flynn and Dr. Cooper make a desperate search for a missing man, but to no avail. Once again, a resident falls victim to a violent death from the unknown menace.  Someone, however, will soon have first-hand experience with the thing that stalks the town, and with that learns just how strange and terrible it is. 

After the terrible discovery high in the mountains, Sheriff Flynn reflects on his past. Dr. Cooper travels to examine a fellow veteran from the Great War, one who bears deep scars, both physical and emotional. Later on, at the town’s Winter Carnival, Hattie overhears some disturbing information regarding the deaths of some local men.
