The Need for Discernment

Look around, and you see the signs everywhere. You know when a cloud rises in the west that rain is coming. You feel the hot wind from the south and know the day will be scorching. We are skilled at reading the natural world around us, yet Jesus confronts us with a hard truth. Why can we discern these ordinary things, yet we fail to discern the far greater spiritual realities unfolding before our very eyes? We have been given over 300 prophecies about the Messiah in Scripture. John the Baptist came to prepare His way. Jesus performed miracles never before seen. He rose from the dead. The signs were as clear as storm clouds gathering in the sky, yet so many missed Him entirely. They refused to see what God had placed right before their faces.

Jesus is coming back, and we must ask ourselves, are we ready? The time to settle with God is now, not when the trial has commenced. Once you stand before the Judge, it will be too late. You cannot say in that moment, "Wait, I want to make things right now." The opportunity to be reconciled to God through Christ is open to you today. Do not assume tomorrow is guaranteed. Do not wait until it is too late. If you have never placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, turn to Him today. And for those of us who call ourselves Christians, we must live with urgency and active readiness. We must tell others about Jesus while we still have time, for we do not know the day or the hour of His return. Love God with all your heart. Use every moment you have been given to glorify Him and share the gospel. The question is not whether the signs are clear. The question is, will you respond to them before it is too late?

 

 

Households Divided

Jesus came to divide those who follow Him from those who reject Him. Just as a drum shield creates necessary separation to improve the music, Christ creates a necessary division between salvation and condemnation. He came to cast fire upon the earth, a fire that reveals and purifies, that shows God's judgment and His refining work in our lives. But before that fire comes the baptism of the cross, where Jesus will be immersed in suffering to bear the weight of our sin. He looks forward to that moment when His sacrifice will accomplish redemption for all who believe in Him.

Your allegiance matters. The cross divides because it demands a choice from every person who hears the message. Will you follow Jesus or reject Him? Those who choose to follow will often be divided even from their own families, because His truth cuts through everything we build our lives on. But take heart, believer. Jesus knows suffering. He was acquainted with grief so that we might have peace with God, eternal peace that no worldly circumstance can shake. Do not be surprised if the world rejects you for following Him. Instead, hold fast to Christ, speak His truth with love, show the fruit of His Spirit, and trust that your hope rests not in this temporary life but in eternity with Him.

 

 

How Should We Live?

Jesus is coming back, and we don't know when. That's why today I'm asking you the most important question we can wrestle with as believers: How should we live? We must be continually ready, not standing at a window watching, but actively preparing our hearts and lives for His return. Just as the Jewish people tied up their garments during the Passover to be mobile and ready to obey immediately, we too must remove anything that keeps us from obeying Christ. Keep your lamps lit and stay faithfully waiting. Whether the Master delays into the late night watches or comes when we least expect it, those who are found alert and ready will be blessed beyond measure. The Master Himself will serve those who remain faithful.

But what troubles my heart is some of us will grow weary in this waiting. We'll convince ourselves that Jesus won't return in our lifetime and we'll live however we want, neglecting the commands He's given us. We'll mistreat others, pursue selfish pleasures, and forget we're stewards of what God has entrusted to us, not masters of our own destinies. The unfaithful servant will face judgment. Those of us who have been given much spiritual light, especially here in America where we have the Bible freely available and can gather without fear, we bear greater responsibility. Are you a faithful steward with your time, your resources, your relationships, your gifts? Will Jesus find you ready when He comes? Don't wait. Live for Him now with everything you have.

 

 

Against Worrying

We live in an age consumed by anxiety. Studies show the average person spends nearly two hours and twenty minutes every single day worrying about something. We fret over food and clothing, our finances, our future. Yet Jesus speaks directly into this crisis of our hearts. He calls us to stop focusing on these temporary concerns and instead to look in three directions. First, look above your circumstances. Your life is more than food and clothing. God has already given you the greatest gift of life itself, so trust Him to sustain it. Second, look around at God's provision all around you. See how He feeds the ravens that neither sow nor reap. Observe the lilies of the field that toil not, yet Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If God cares for the birds and the flowers and even the grass of the field, how much more will He care for you who are made in His image? Third, look ahead to God's kingdom.

Your greatest inheritance is already secure in heaven. When you invest your heart in God's kingdom instead of earthly treasures, when you seek His priorities instead of chasing temporary possessions, your worries begin to fade. Replace your anxiety with trust. Replace your fear with faith in a loving Father who knows your every need. Your Heavenly Father has gladly chosen to give you His kingdom. So cast all your anxieties upon Him today, for He cares for you. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything bring your requests to God in prayer and thanksgiving. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Trust Him. He is faithful.

 

 

The Folly of Possessions

Imagine you had one question to ask Jesus Himself while He walked the earth. What would you ask? Deep theology? The mysteries of the universe? One man in the crowd asked about his inheritance. While Jesus was teaching His disciples to fear God rather than man and to trust in His provision, this man demanded Jesus settle a family dispute over money. But Jesus saw the real problem. He knew this man's heart was gripped by covetousness, by an excessive desire for possessions that had become his god. So Jesus told him a parable about a rich farmer who had such an abundant harvest he couldn't store it all. The farmer decided to tear down his barns and build bigger ones so he could retire, eat, drink, and be merry. But that very night, God called him a fool. All his planning, all his possessions, all his security meant nothing when his soul was required of him. God asked, "Now who will own what you have prepared?"

Here's what Jesus wants you to understand. Your life is not measured by what you own. Your identity is not found in your bank account or your retirement plan or your stuff. You are a child of God, and that is your greatest identity. Every possession you have is temporary. Every earthly treasure will belong to someone else one day. But treasures stored in heaven last forever. So the question for you today is this: Are you storing up treasure for yourself, or are you rich toward God? Use everything He has blessed you with for His glory. Give faithfully. Serve regularly. Invest in spreading the gospel. Because when you trust in God with everything you have, you discover the only wealth that truly matters.

 

 

There Is a God Who Cares!

God leads us through five transformative crossings as we read through Psalms 23. We walk from lost to found, discovering that God is not a distant creator but a personal shepherd who knows us intimately and leads us through every season of life. From the wrong path to the right path, God guides us through His Word. From fearful to peaceful, His rod and staff comfort us even in the valley of the shadow of death. From grumbling to grateful, He prepares a table before us and pours out blessings that overflow. And finally, from shaky to sure, we discover that goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives. Whether you're facing a giant decision, walking through a difficult season, or simply seeking to deepen your trust in the Lord, this message reminds us that we serve a shepherd who cares.

The question isn't whether God cares for you, but whether you'll let Him be your shepherd today. If you haven't yet trusted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, this is your moment to turn from sin and place your faith in the Good Shepherd who came to seek and save the lost. If you already know Jesus, I invite you to dedicate yourself anew to following Him with confidence. Our God keeps His promises. He is faithful. And like the rainbow that reminds us of His covenant, every sign of His goodness in your life is a reminder that you can trust Him completely.

 

 

Be Wary of Hypocrisy

Jesus dealt repeatedly with hypocrisy because it matters deeply. You know the feeling when someone tells you they will do something and then does the opposite. We resent it in others, and when we catch ourselves doing it, we feel convicted. Jesus addressed this issue with the Pharisees, the lawyers, and even His own disciples because hypocrisy is like leaven in bread. It starts small, grows, and spreads throughout everything until you cannot separate it from who you are. God sees what is hidden. He knows the difference between what we appear to be and who we actually are. The good news is that if you are worried about your own hypocrisy, if you are convicted about living one way in public and another in private, that conviction itself means your heart has not been hardened to God. There is forgiveness available through Jesus Christ.

So I am asking you today to examine your life. Are you more concerned with seeming faithful than being faithful? Do people know you follow Jesus by how you live? Will your private life support your public testimony? Instead of fearing what people think, fear the Holy God who alone has authority over your eternal judgment. Yet do not live in terror. God cares for you more than the sparrows of the field. He knows every hair on your head. Confess Jesus before others. Live boldly for Him. Do not deny Him through your actions or your silence. And when you stumble, when you fall short, know that the Holy Spirit empowers you, teaches you, and advocates for you. That same Spirit who transformed Peter from a denier into a bold proclaimer lives in you. Turn to Jesus today, repent, believe, and He will transform you into a new creation.

 

 

Woes To The Lawyers

In Luke chapter 11, Jesus confronts the lawyers and religious leaders who have become obstacles to God's truth. These experts in the law burden people with endless rules while refusing to lift a finger themselves, yet they sit in judgment. But here's what pierces my heart: they've taken away the key of knowledge. They've hidden God's commandments from the very people who depend on them for truth. They build monuments to the prophets their fathers killed while plotting to do the same thing to Jesus. Their traditions have become so heavy that people are crushed under the weight of them, unable to see the way to God.

So what does this mean for us today? We must never be the ones who stand between people and God's truth. When you speak about Jesus, don't hide the law of God. Don't soft-pedal the commandments. Help people see that they're born sinners, that their hearts are broken, that they need rescue. Tell them gently and with love, just like Jesus did, but tell them the truth. Because when a person finally admits their sin and turns to Christ, when they confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart that God raised Him from the dead, they'll be set free. That weight comes off. Everything changes. Your want-tos change. That's the power of the gospel, and that's what we're called to proclaim.

 

 

Woes To The Pharisees

When a respected religious leader invited Him to dine, Jesus did something shocking. He didn't wash His hands before eating, and when the man was astonished, Jesus cut straight to the heart of the matter. That Pharisee thought the problem was unwashed hands. But Jesus knew the real problem was an unclean heart. He looked at those clean cups and dishes on the table and said they were spotless on the outside while full of greed and wickedness on the inside. And then He made it personal. These religious leaders were meticulous about their offerings and their rules, but they neglected justice and the love of God. They loved the best seats in the synagogues, they loved the praise of men, but Jesus said they were like unmarked graves, spiritually dead and spreading death all around them.

So what does this mean for you and me? Jesus is calling us to something better than managing our appearance or checking religious boxes. He wants alignment between what's inside and what's outside. He wants your whole heart, not just your good reputation. That means stopping the performance, stopping the selective obedience where we're careful about little things while ignoring where He's pressing on us. It means bringing both your public life and your secret life to Him in honest repentance, because He already sees inside that cup anyway. True faith produces real obedience, and Jesus promises that if you come to Him broken and believing, He will make you clean. Not just on the outside, but where it actually matters.

 

 

The Light of Jesus' Word

Jesus is the light of the world, and His word is meant to guide us, not just to be admired from a distance. In this sermon, we explore what it truly means to receive and reflect that light. When we stand face to face with Christ, the question isn't whether His light is bright enough. The question is whether we're willing to receive it. Just as a lamp must be placed on a stand to illuminate those around it, so too must we be saturated with Christ's light so completely that it radiates outward through our actions, our choices, and our character. We cannot hide this light under a basket or keep it locked away. We are called to let it shine before the world so brightly that others see the goodness of God reflected in us.

But there is a sobering warning here as well. We must guard this light with vigilance, for darkness can subtly corrupt our vision until we mistake falsehood for truth. Satan doesn't announce himself as the enemy but disguises himself as enlightenment. When we begin to reshape God's truth to fit our preferences, when we redefine Scripture instead of submitting to it, we risk becoming spiritually blind while believing ourselves enlightened. The challenge before us is clear: receive Christ's light, guard it fiercely against distortion, and reflect it so faithfully that a watching world cannot help but see Jesus in us. The darker the world becomes, the brighter God's people must shine.
