A long time ago in China, there was a kind cowherd named Niulang. He lived a simple life, looking after his cows. One day, he met a beautiful fairy named Zhinu. She was a weaver girl who came down from the sky to visit Earth. They fell in love and got married, living happily with their two children.

But Zhinu's mother, the Queen of Heaven, was angry because she didn't want Zhinu to live on Earth. So, she used her magic to create a wide river of stars in the sky, called the Milky Way, to keep them apart.

Niulang was very sad, but his loyal ox told him a secret. If he put on the ox's magic hide, he could fly up to the sky. So, Niulang took his children and flew up to find Zhinu.

The Queen of Heaven saw this and realized how much they loved each other. She allowed them to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. On that special night, magpies form a bridge with their wings so Niulang and Zhinu can be together.

And that's why people celebrate the Qixi Festival, to remember the love between the cowherd and the weaver girl. Some even say if you sit quietly under a grapevine at night, you might hear them talking!
